It appears that Nancy Pelosi may not have enough support among her own caucus to be elected as the next Speaker of the House. While she can certainly win a majority of Democrats, she also needs to win a majority of the House in order to win.

As it stands, the Democrats are expected to hold a margin of about 235-200 over the Republicans. If so, she can only have about 15 Democrats fail to support her in the House vote, or she would not be elected.

According to the Huffington Post, there are more than 20 Democrats who are ready to publish a letter pledging not to vote for Pelosi as the next Speaker of the House. They believe that some newer, possibly younger leadership is needed.

This matter is further complicated by the fact that nobody appears to currently be running against Pelosi. The strategy appears to be to make it clear that she cannot win, and then some new leaders will stand forward to replace her.

Of course the Democrats prefer a centrally controlled agenda and this sort of "grass roots" style leadership is considered distasteful by the Democrat party elites. This is not how this is supposed to work, in their view. Stay tuned, this could be interesting.

You have no idea how corrupt the DNC is... the old guard will keep power and they will do what needs to be done to get their way. Pelosi will get whatever she wants.

That certainly appeared to be the case during 2016 presidential primary contest and then the general election contest as well. The DNC has made conciliatory statements insisting that they have changed their ways now in the aftermath of all of that, but should anyone really believe them at this point?

Sadly, you may well be right.

Doesn't matter who it is. Dem or Rep... all are competing for power. Politics follows consistent rules across cultures and history. Corruption is built into the game and used to play the game. Expect it. Being without corruption is the exception, not the rule. This is why I expect it.

You guys sound desperate to know who you are going to be b****ing about the next two years nonstop,

Most Dems are okay with Pelosi unless a better candidate runs against her. I don’t think she’s the strongest in front of a camera but she’s a really good legislator. Also doesn’t mind being the villain of the right kind of like how McConnell embraces it on the right. She has a job to do and won’t care about what people like you write about on online forums.

Corruption in the DNC??... a Trump fan in 2018 has no moral high ground to point fingers at Dems for corruption.

Democrats get conspiracy theories about corruption while Trumplicans continue to get indicted for Corruption. (See Trump appointed EPA head just yesterday getting indicted for corruption).

I think it will be a mistake to replace Pelosi at this point. Im not a fan of Pelosi by any means, however if the DNC puts a 'Never Trumper' in her place (like many Democrats want), its not going to fare well in the end. Pelosi will be able to negotiate Trump much better than many in the house.

Pelosi likely has all the support she needs.

What will be interesting will be how many "freshman" members will get leadership positions, if any.

It does not matter if "most" Democrats are supportive of Pelosi as Speaker. She has to get 218 votes in the House to get the job. It appears that the Democrats will have about 235 seats when all the races are decided. 235-218=17 Democrat votes that she can lose and still get elected to this position.

However, if the Huffington Post article is correct, there are more than 20 Democrats who are committed to not voting for her. If that is right, Nancy Pelosi will not be the next speaker of the House. It will be someone else. I will not venture to guess who, other than it will be a Democrat in Congress.

Dems rule by seniority, so their chairmen never retire and hold the gavel forever (GOP has rotating chairmanships)

Trump promised Pelosi some votes to put her over the hump!

Anyway, these 20 democrats are counting on someone who can gain a consensus to emerge. Maybe that happens. But, if it doesn't, it puts a ton of pressure on them to cave. They have a big agenda of harassing Trump to get started on, and the last thing they need right now is uncertainty about the leadership. If they can't quickly find someone else that can get 218 votes, I think they will have to concede and vote for Pelosi in the end anyway.

It's time for her to step out of the picture all together if you ask me.

Pelosi is a skilled and formidable legislator and can get things done. However, I would have no problem with new blood in leadership positions.

Can somebody tell me what Pelosi has done that she should be removed from her job.

And who is this person that should replace her?
