many of us want Melo here
we know he is a top 5 player
    but how about his defense?
    Kobe,Wade,James,Durant are good defenders
how do you rank Melo's D?

his ability on offense makes up for his ability on defense

Melo is not a bad defender, in fact when he wants to be, he is a great defender. But most of the time he is above average

    wait, does this actually matter?

I mean, WHO GIVES A DAMN ABOUT HIS DEFENSE when he pumps in 30 points per game amidst a barrage of double teams and weak post players hardly able to score while he defers to them when hes tries to spread the load?

    Melo . will . be . the . savior . of . the . Houston . Rockets

    and defense dont matter

It was widely publicized last year how much more of a concerted effort he was dedicating to defense. Post all-star break, Melo was a very good defender. Of course, no one here will recognize it, since they'll read 30,000 posts from the same poster about how he's a chucker...do not want...want for scraps...don't want at all...rinse, repeat.

Yep. I voted "Good". Some of the defense he's had to do on players like Kobe and LeBron was actually quite good... he just had to want to do it. The biggest downfall of his defense is what's between his ears.

Average defender. McGrady was a liability. Martin and Brooks are both concerns.

    Carmelo would be better than
Chase, Brooks, Martin, Hill (and probably Patterson and recovering Yao)

    Even with
    Scola

and a lesser defender than Hayes, Battier, Lowry, Lee, Jeffries, Miller.

Like some have mentioned, whatever drop in defense we get with Melo is made up for in spades by his offense. And again, he's not a guy you have to hide on defense. He needs help against guys like Durant and LeBron....but that's the case for every SF in the league.

Slightly below average. But he has the tools to be better.

Morey said they consider playing hard a skillset, does Melo's lack of playing hard on defense mean he lacks that skillset?

The same could be said of Kevin Martin.

Melo is a hard worker, he wouldn't average 28 points and 6 rebounds if he wasn't. It's more the basketball IQ side of defense he has to learn.

I totally disagree, I think it is 100% about his desire.

This. It used to be terrible but you can tell that it is something he is working on. Keep in mind, he is athletic, strong and fairly intelligent.

Same could be said of Kevin Martin.

But I disagree. He just needs to learn from Battier. Martin will always limited by his build, Melo has the tools.
