Crazy. That first vid and seeing the shockwave just demolish surrounding buildings looks like it came straight from a Michael Bay movie.

Appears to be a huge stock pile of ammonium nitrate at the port.

Blew up kind of like a thermobaric bomb -- possibly some sort of gas escaped then the fireworks (?) Ignited the whole cloud of material... Weird.

Tragic and devastating. May all those that were affected have strength in this time of need.

As crazy as this sounds, this couldve been way worse. The location of the blast had only one side of buildings around it. Imagine if the blast was centered in the middle of the city. This is just craziness man. Hope all is well to everybody involved.

It looks like the Texas City Disaster on April 16, 1947. It was the worst industrial accident in US history and one of the largest non-nuclear explosions ever. My father said that most of a body was found in Southeast Houston on the east side of what is the Gulf Freeway today, towards town and not far from Sims Bayou.

The explosion from Texas City was heard miles and miles away. This one was reportedly heard in Cyprus, probably due to the Mediterranean being the only thing between that large island and Beirut. The ultimate death count from this absolutely shocking explosion will very likely be in the hundreds, if not higher. I've been to Beirut. It was a very long time ago and it was called The Paris of the Middle East at the time. God knows what it looks like now.

What a catastrophe. Just incredible. I feel for the people of the city. They had already suffered enough, and now this.

Those responsible for Beirut 'catastrophe' will 'pay price': PM
Hassan Diab also appeals for international assistance to help Lebanon, which is already mired in major economic crisis.

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab has pledged that those responsible for a massive explosion in Beirut's port, which killed dozens of people and wounded thousands, would be held to account.

"What happened today will not pass without accountability," he said in a televised address on Tuesday.

"Those responsible for this catastrophe will pay the price."

The exact cause of the explosion that was felt across the capital was not immediately clear, but officials said it could be due to "explosive materials" confiscated and stored in a warehouse "for years".

Diab, in his speech, promised announcements about "this dangerous warehouse that has been in existence for six years, since 2014."

The prime minister also appealed for international assistance to help Lebanon, already struggling with its worst economic crisis and a surging coronavirus outbreak.

"I am sending an urgent appeal to all countries that are friends and brothers and love Lebanon, to stand by its side and help us treat these deep wounds," said Diab, whose government gained confidence in February after anti-establishment protesters forced the resignation fo the government of former Prime Minister Saad Hariri...

I heard about this earlier today and knew it was bad, but that video...

2500+ tons of ammonium nitrate was stored there -- 3000+ injured and counting.

I had to look it up, but to put that in perspective, Timothy McVeigh used 2 tons to blow up the Federal Building in OKC.

Watch the building on the right in the foreground in the video below and how far away from the blast site it is. I'm looking at pics of the devastation online and it's nuts.
