JUSTIN JAMES COULD RANK AMONG THE BEST IN WYOMING HOOPS HISTORY

Kenny Sailors, Flynn Robinson, Fennis Dembo, Larry Nance, Jr., and...Justin James? Keep an eye on #1 this season, you could be watching one of Wyoming's all-time greats.

James enters his senior season ranked 19th on the career scoring list with 1,355 points. Barring injury, the All-Mountain West guard could end up in the top five. He'll need to average 15 points per game to pass Josh Adams for fifth place. Matching last year's 18.9 average would overtake Eric Leckner for fourth place. James would need to average over 22 points per game to pass Flynn Robinson for third place and over 26 points per game to move past Brandon Ewing into second place. For now, Fennis Dembo's career scoring record is safe. James would need to average nearly 31 points per game to claim to the mark.

But James is more than just a scorer, according to his coach Allen Edwards.

"He’s a guy that not only scores the basketball but rebounds the basketball, a guy that also assists because he has to make the game a little bit easier for these guys," Edward told the Casper Star-Tribune.

The Florida native has steadily improved since arriving in Laramie three years ago. As a freshman, he averaged just over 5.2 points per game and showed glimpses of future greatness. In his sophomore season, James firmly established himself as a team leader, averaging 16 points and five rebounds. As a junior, James became one of the top players in the conference, earning All-Mountain West honors with 18.9 points, six rebounds and three assists per game.

James will carry an even bigger load as a senior. With eight newcomers on the Wyoming roster, James is the only returning player who averaged more than 5.3 points last season. If he can stay healthy, he will be remembered among the best all-around players in Pokes history.

    No. 6/7 Nevada (23-1, 10-1) at Wyoming (6-18, 2-9)

    Where: Arena-Auditorium (11,445 capacity)

Three keys for Nevada to win
    1. Crank the tempo: Nevada’s improved offensive play over the last five games has dovetailed with its improved offensive pace. The Wolf Pack is averaging 75 possessions per game during that stretch. It hit 75 possessions just three times in its first 19 games of the year. Nevada is up to 98th in KenPom’s adjusted tempo metric after being in the 200s last month. Wyoming will try and slow the game down against the high-octane Wolf Pack. The Cowboys are averaging 65.7 possessions per game over its last six outings and understands as an underdog the fewer possessions the better. Wyoming has been playing zone defense of late, in part because it is down in numbers and can conserve energy with that scheme. The Wolf Pack’s zone offense has been improved in recent outings and was stellar after adding a new set – a play called “Touchdown” – in its last game, a 29-point win over New Mexico. The zone isn’t slowing down Nevada’s pace as much as it did earlier this season, but playing with tempo really starts on the defensive end by getting stops, rebounds and running. If Nevada gets this game into the 80s, it wins easily.

    2. Contain Justin James: When asked this week what about Wyoming stands out on film, Nevada head coach Eric Musselman needed just two words: “Justin James.” The 6-foot-7 guard is averaging 20.9 points, 8.4 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. He’s one of the most dangerous players in the Mountain West, although he’s received minimal help from his teammates. James can be a volume scorer as he’s shooting just 40 percent from the field and 31 percent from three. Given his lack of help, his efficiency has fallen as a senior and his turnovers (3.9 per game) have skyrocketed. But James has been superb over the last four games, averaging 26.3 points per game on 52.3 percent shooting, including 54.1 percent from three. Despite his team’s struggles, he’s stayed positive and optimistic rather than turned selfish as he aims for an NBA career. If Wyoming is going to upset Nevada, James must have a big game, which he is more than capable of. Expect the Martin twins to get the defensive assignment.

    3. Crush Cowboys on glass: Wyoming is one of the nation’s worst rebounding team. Its 45 percent rebounding rate is the 13th worst in the country. Its minus-6.6 rebounding margin is the seventh worst in the nation. Nevada hasn’t been a great rebounding team, but it is coming off its best rebounding effort of the season after crushing a long New Mexico team by 14 on the backboard. Wyoming has good size across the board, but it hasn’t translated on the glass. The Cowboys are a horrible offensive rebounding team, grabbing just 13.3 percent of its misses, the worst (by a wide margin) out of 353 Division I teams. It is better on the defensive glass, but Nevada should win the rebounding battle by double-digits if it plays aggressively. Wyoming’s top two rebounders are 6-7 guards (James and Hunter Maldonado). They’re the only two players on the team who average more than 4.1 boards a night. The Cowboy forwards have been lacking in that area.

    Prediction
Nevada 85, Wyoming 65: Wyoming has used 11 starters this season and had to include some mid-year walk-ons, including one from the football team, to beef up its roster. It’s been that kind of a season for the Cowboys, who are on pace for their first season with single-digit wins since 1973-74. Per KenPom’s metrics, Wyoming has the MW’s second-worst offense and third-worst defense (Nevada is first in both categories). The Cowboys have been playing better of late, but this game should not be competitive into the final five minutes. If it is, something has gone terribly wrong for Nevada, which is looking for its 12th win away from Lawlor Events Center this season. It shouldn’t have an issue securing that. Season record: 23-1

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 16, 2019) – The No. 6/7 Nevada Wolf Pack, the highest ranked team to come to the Arena-Auditorium in five years was too much for the Cowboys to overcome in a 82-49 defeat on Saturday evening. The Cowboys were held to a season low 49 points on a season low 30 percent from the field. The Wolf Pack move to 24-1 overall and 11-1 in the MW, as Wyoming falls to 6-19 overall and 2-10 in the conference.

"Nevada is a very good basketball team," Wyoming head coach Allen Edwards said. "Their mentality coming on the road and playing as hard as they did is a credit to Coach Musselman, his staff and their players. They did a great job of executing their game plan. It was a learning experience for our guys. I appreciate the fans for sticking around til the end. I thought the student section and our fans did a great job of continuing to encourage our guys until the very end of the game."

Wyoming was led by senior guard Justin James with 16 points. He has scored in double-figures 22 times this season and 85 times in his career. He led the Pokes with four assists and added seven rebounds. Freshman Trevon "TJ" Taylor added 13 points and led Wyoming with eight rebounds.

"In our game earlier this week at Utah State, we saw the passive TJ (Taylor), but after watching film with him and addressing that with him this week he came out tonight with great energy," Edwards said. He did a good job of being aggressive and taking shots when he was open. I told him that is what we need to see from him every night."

The Pokes were 15-of-50 from the field and 6-of-24 from behind the arc. Wyoming was averaging 12 three pointers per game over the previous three contests. The Wolf Pack shot 50 percent from the field and owned a 40-28 advantage on the glass.

The Wolf Pack raced out to a 9-3 lead in the opening three-plus minutes. Cody Martin did the damage for Nevada with seven of those points. Wyoming's James would hit three free throws to make it an 11-8 game with 14:36 left in the half, but the Wolf Pack's Jazz Johnson added a triple and a pair of free throws from Tre'Shawn Thurman made it a 16-18 game less than a minute later.

Nevada went on an 8-0 run over 3:30 to build a 24-10 advantage. The Wolf Pack were shooting 64 percent from the field going 9-of-14 to that point. The run was halted by a free throw from James. The Pokes went 1-of-9 from the field during the stretch.

Nevada built the advantage to as much as 17 points with 9:20 left in the opening frame. Taylor continued to be a threat offensively moving to nine points on the night making it a 32-18 game with just under five minutes left.

Johnson closed out the half with a three pointer to give the Wolf Pack a 36-20 lead at the break. Wyoming was held to 27 percent from the field with Nevada shooting a solid 50 percent.

Junior A.J. Banks opened the second half with an alley-oop off a nice dish from James. But the Pokes would go 1-of-8 from the field after allowing the Wolf Pack to build a 45-25 lead with 14:40 left in the game.

The Pokes went on a 5-0 run with a jumper from Taylor and a triple from Banks to make it a 48-30 game with 13:15 left. The bucket from Taylor got him to double-figures for the seventh time this season and the first since playing at Boise State.

Nevada would answer with five made buckets in a row to build the lead to 60-33 with under nine minutes remaining. Nevada's Trey Porter became a force in the paint helping the Wolf Pack build a 31 point lead at 74-43 with three minutes remaining and would take the game 82-49.

The Wolf Pack had five players in double-figures on the night. Trey Porter led Nevada with 14 points. Thurman finished the evening with a game-high 12 rebounds and added 11 points. Jazz Johnson was 4-of-5 from the three point line.

Wyoming returns home on Tuesday at 8 p.m. hosting UNLV in a contest televised on CBS Sports Network.

Wyoming heads into Tuesday's game with a 6-19 overall record and a 2-10 mark in Mountain West play. Wyoming fell to No. 6/7 Nevada at home on Saturday by a score of 82-49. Wyoming was held to a season-low 49 points and shot a season-low 30 percent from the field.

The Pokes hit six three pointers against the Wolf Pack, but headed into the game averaging 12 three pointers per game over their last three contest. Wyoming is still averaging 10.5 triples over the last four games, which is nearly three triples more per game than the season average of 7.6.

The Runnin' Rebels are 14-11 overall on the season and 8-5 in the conference. UNLV defeated San Jose State on the road 71-64 on Saturday, as UNLV has won three of their last four games and sit in fifth place in the league.

UNLV averages 38.7 rebounds per game to rank second in the MW. The Runnin' Rebels attack the offensive glass recording 13.8 offensive boards per game to lead the conference. UNLV is shooting 43 percent from the field and 34 percent from behind the three-point line.

UNLV faces MW’s leading scorer in Wyoming’s Justin James

UNLV takes on Wyoming, Justin James on Tuesday (Mark Anderson/Las Vegas Review-Journal)

Justin James knows opponents will throw nearly any kind of defense at him.

As Wyoming’s leading scorer — and the Mountain West’s — defenses have tried every kind of strategy to limit his effectiveness, the most common being double teams off ball screens.

“My game plan going into any game is to see how the defense is guarding me the first few possessions and play basketball after that,” James said.

UNLV (14-11, 8-5 MW) is the next team that will try to keep James from carrying the Cowboys (6-19, 2-10) to victory. CBS Sports Network will televise the game, which begins at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Arena-Auditorium in Laramie, Wyoming.

James, a 6-foot-7-inch senior guard, averages 20.7 points for a Wyoming team that scores only 65.3 points per game.

Wyoming’s struggles are not a surprise given the Cowboys had to replace departing seniors Hayden Dalton and Alan Herndon, who combined to average 29.5 points and 13.5 rebounds last season. Two other players graduated and five more transferred. Then the season began and injuries set in and Lwal Dung decided to play overseas.

“With the injuries, it’s obviously brought a lot of adversity to our group,” James said. “But it’s mainly been a team thing, everybody stepping up and everybody playing your role and increase their role a little bit. Obviously, with the ball being in my hands a lot of the games, there are going to be moments I have to make plays and the right decisions. But it isn’t just a me-step-up and me-take-over type of deal, it’s everybody steps up and everybody contributes.”

The numbers in many ways bear that out. James also averages 8.4 rebounds and 4.4 assists, so he isn’t just scoring and is getting his teammates involved.

“He has done everything we have asked him to do on and off the court,” Wyoming coach Allen Edwards said. “He’s been a great leader. A kid in his scenario and his situation could’ve easily shut it down, and that would’ve affected everybody else. But he continues to come to practice, and he continues to come to games with the right mentality and the right attitude and still trying to mentor these young men.

“I told him, ‘I don’t know how it’s going to end for you, but what you’re doing is helping this program. It’s helping this culture going forward. This is something in the sense of passing down your legacy because you’re sacrificing probably a lot of individual things for the betterment of this program, and I’m telling you we need more.”’
    So did the NBA scouts.

James initially declared for the draft last season after he averaged 18.9 points, but made 30.8 percent of his 3-point attempts.

Despite shooting 29.3 percent from 3-point range this season, James has shown progress. He made 13 of 24 3-pointers over a four-game span before Saturday’s 82-49 loss to No. 6 UNR in which he went 0-for-7.

“I’ve never had a problem being a stand-still, catch-and-shoot type of guy,” James said. “But this is my first year where I have to make a lot of my 3-pointers coming off ball screens because the ball is my hand most of the time. Just that little change in my game and continuing to improve will definitely help me in the next level.”

Late Surge by Cowboys Falls Short in 66-56 Loss to UNLV

LARAMIE, Wyo. (Feb. 19, 2019) – Despite another 20 point performance from senior guard Justin James, the Cowboy (6-20 overall, 2-11 MW) offense could not find a consistent rhythm in a 66-56 loss to UNLV (15-11, 9-5 MW) on Tuesday evening in the Arena-Auditorium. James scored 25 points for his 44th 20-point scoring performance in his career.

"I thought we put ourselves in position to win the basketball game but it crumbled at the end," UW head coach Allen Edwards said. "We turned the ball over 19 times, which is obviously too many. I thought we had a good push in the second half when we had a chance to cut the lead to one with about three and a half minutes to play, but we missed the free throw and then after that they went on a run to stretch out their lead. We did a great job of defending the three-point line, but they were able to drive the ball against us way too much, and we didn't secure some much needed rebounds.

Wyoming nearly erased a 10-point deficit with under seven minutes remaining coming within two points with 3:34 left. But the Runnin' Rebels closed the game on an 11-1 run to take their fourth win in the last five games.

"They (UNLV) have a good group of scorers on their team," UW head coach Allen Edwardssaid. "We told our guys that we would have to be able to close out and affect their shots tonight but the next biggest thing was to defend the paint. It wasn't so much about them throwing it into their big guy, it was more about them driving to the paint, and we didn't do a good job with our secondary defense to step up and take charges."

James was 7-of-14 on the night from the field and was an impressive 9-of-12 from the free throw line. James had his hand in 81 percent of Wyoming's scoring on the evening. He added six rebounds and five assists as well. Junior guard A.J. Banks added nine points for his highest scoring margin since adding 10 points at New Mexico on Jan. 19. He also tied a career-high with four assists.

After redshirt freshman Hunter Thompson opened the game with a bucket, the Runnin' Rebels went on a 10-0 run for a 10-2 lead with 15:40 remaining in the opening 20 minutes. Two of the baskets by UNLV came off of Cowboy turnovers. Junior guard Jake Hendricks would get going for the Pokes with five-straight points to make it a 13-9 game with under 14 minutes left in the half.

After James made it a two-point game at 13-11, the Runnin' Rebels made a trio of buckets to extend the lead to eight points at 19-11 halfway through the half.

Banks sparked a 10-0 run for the Pokes highlighted by an acrobatic layup, followed by a steal and assist on a James three pointer to make it a one point game at 19-18. Banks would then add a three pointer to give Wyoming a 21-19 advantage with 6:31 left in the opening frame.

The Rebels held the Pokes scoreless for just over four minutes to close the half and took a 30-23 lead at the break. The Rebels shot 48 percent from the field, as the Pokes were held to 32 percent. The Pokes were without James to end the half.

James hit three free throws to make it a 30-26 game in favor of UNLV to open the half. But the Runnin' Rebels responded with 11-2 run to build a 13-point advantage at 41-28 with 17:25 left in the game. Wyoming went on a 5-0 run thanks to a three from James and a dunk from Naughton on a dish Banks for a 41-33 game with 15:26 remaining.

The Pokes would cut it to six points, but a scoring drought by the Cowboys of nearly four minutes let the Runnin' Rebels move the lead to 10 points at 47-37 halfway through the second stanza. Wyoming would hit back-to-back threes in two trips down the floor and made it a 49-45 game with 7:48 remaining in the contest.

UNLV responded to the Pokes run with a 6-0 run and took the lead back to 10 points with under seven minutes. But James and the Pokes wouldn't go away going on an 8-0 run to make it a 55-53 game with 3:34 left in the game. James scored six points in the run including his second highlight reel dunk of the game.

UNLV went on a 7-0 after the Pokes surge that gave them a nine point leads with 1:09 remaining and that's all the Runnin' Rebels would need on their way to the 66-56 win.

The Runnin' Rebels were led in scoring by Kris Clyburn with 17 points. Joel Ntambwe added 15 points and six rebounds. Mbacke Diong added a game-high 11 rebounds and eight points going 4-of-4 from the field.

The Cowboys return to action on Saturday heading south to Fort Collins to take on Colorado State in the second edition of the Border War at High Noon inside Moby Arena.

    Well that sucked!

JJ has to take control of this/his game in the second half for Wyoming to have a chance. Forget the paint, protect the basketball!

This is a Houston sports forum and you’re continuously posting about your cousin that plays college basketball at WYOMING. I’ll delete my account if there’s actually one person besides you who cares at all about a college basketball player from Wyoming on a Houston sports forum.
