Count me in. Dump him now while he is not in a wheelchair. This guy has a short shelf life.

So much for that done deal. ;)

Why Texans may hesitate on Jadeveon Clowney's extension

When the Texans entered the offseason, two of their goals were to sign linebackers Jadeveon Clowney and Benardrick McKinney to contract extensions.

McKinney, a second-round pick in 2015, signed a five-year, $50 million extension last week. He gets $21 million guaranteed.

Clowney, the first overall pick in 2014, has yet to sign an extension. Before last season, the Texans exercised his fifth-year option for 2018, when he'll make $12.3 million.

I may be wrong, but I don't think the Texans will sign Clowney to an extension. He missed the on-field part of the offseason program to rehab a knee injury that required arthroscopic surgery in January. Until he shows them he's healthy, able to consistently stay on the field and play as well or better than last season, I don't see them committing long-term to him.

Coach Bill O'Brien said recently that Clowney assured him he would be on the field when the Texans start training camp in West Virginia on July 26. That would give them a six-week window to sign Clowney to an extension.

First-year general manager Brian Gaine's philosophy is the same as his predecessor, Rick Smith, in that there will be no contract negotiations during the regular season. That means the Texans would try to sign Clowney to a new contract next year or have to use the franchise tag on him. There's no way they'd let him leave as a free agent.

Rams' defensive tackle Aaron Donald, Oakland defensive end Khalil Mack and Clowney are prominent defensive players who haven't been signed to extensions. Donald and Mack missed their offseason programs. Clowney did not.

Like Clowney, they didn't risk injury by not participating in their OTAs and minicamps. But Clowney showed up to rehab at NRG Stadium.

Maybe the Texans will have time to get an extension done with Clowney during training camp. The Texans have signed players to extensions between the beginning of camp and before the start of preseason – quarterback Matt Schaub, offensive tackle Eric Winston and receiver DeAndre Hopkins to name three.

But there were substantive negotiations throughout the process with Schaub, Winston and Hopkins. There have been no substantive negotiations to get a deal done with Clowney.

If Clowney doesn't sign an extension before the season begins at New England, that might be good for him. He's been terrific in the past two seasons, especially in 2017 when injuries to end J.J. Watt and outside linebacker Whitney Mercilus left Clowney as the only legitimate pass rusher. He had career highs with 9 ½ sacks, 21 quarterback hits, 21 tackles for loss and 59 tackles.

If Watt and Mercilus stay healthy, that'll be good for Clowney because he won't face as many double-team blocks as last season. If he plays even better than last season and establishes career highs in the important statistics – not to mention helping the Texans return to the playoffs -- the price of doing business with him will go up.

Well, Pancakes said it’s unlikely to happen. That must mean it’s all but sealed that he’s signing an extension.

Is it at the 2 yard line with Chris Brown taking shotgun?

You watch, once the extension is signed, he limps off the field and never plays football again. This guy is not in love with football. Once he scores the big money, he walks or limps into the sunset.

Some guys like Watson or Watt loves football and you can tell. Not sure clowney has ever loved the game but he has honed his craft . Just not sure if his knees will be there

Maybe the tide is turning on Kirby. Giving that money to Clowney is such a mistake.

I think they franchise him at least once to make sure he can stay healthy before he gets a big payday.

Clowney is a game-changing player, the likes of which are necessary to separate a defense from the rest of the pack. He has stretches of games where he dominates. He strikes fear in opposing teams' quarterbacks - Tom Brady is a prime example! Do not overlook the psychological aspect of the game. Clowney is an intimidating presence and backs it up with his skill set and physical attributes. We need him on this defense as a cornerstone for years to come.

    GOOD DAY

too many around town want to focus on the number of sacks he doesn't get. But his disruption causes havoc all throughout the opposing offensive line. Health and this defense will be one of the best and I'm not including watt, that's how amazing clowney is.

Jadeveon Clowney (knee) has yet to be cleared for team drills.

"Some guys are needing to get back into a little better football shape right now as far as playing football, he comes under that category," coach Bill O'Brien said. "He wasn't able to, because of his rehab and all that, he wasn't able to be in OTAs. We're just trying to be intelligent about the way we bring him back." Clowney has taken a surprisingly long time to get back to full health after a post-season knee scope, but there does not seem to be any concern about his Week 1 status.
