Gronkowski is imploding

    Gronk may need back surgery

    In addition to a fourth surgery on his broken forearm, New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski might need back surgery, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

    Gronkowski recently underwent an MRI on his back to check on a disk issue from last season according to ESPN and media reports. The injury is not considered serious, the source said. If he needs back surgery, it would be performed during the time frame he would be sidelined after his forearm surgery, which is expected next week.

    Gronkowski will see noted spine specialist Robert Watkins in the near future following his surgery on his forearm. That surgery if all goes well will take about 10 weeks for Gronkowski to recover from.

    "He is going to be fine long term," a source close to Gronkowski said. "[He is] not worried about the short term, i.e., start of training camp."

    This disk injury is not related to the disk problem that required a procedure in 2009, the source said. It was not immediately clear what caused the current disk issue in his back or when it was discovered.

    He probably was on his way to being the greatest TE, ever, arguably with Tony Gonzalez.

    kellen winslow sr and shannon sharpe are 1. 2.


    nobody more overrated in the history of the NFL than that pos Tony Gonzalez.

    #1 in receiving yards among Tight ends, and also yards per season.

    Beats both Winslow Sr. and Sharpe in sheer longevity.

    I wonder who was the best blocker of those 3.

    He's never played with a QB as good as Elway or Fouts. Don't get me wrong Ryan is good, but he's neither and this is near the twilight of Gonzo's career.

    This isn't to take anything away from Sharpe or Winslow.

    Sharpe was a tweener wide receiver converted to TE. Winslow was truly special. As is Gonzalez.

    Where did you learn that? You're too young to have seen either of them play.

    Gonzo is a first ballot HOFer. How, exactly, is he an overrated pos? Did he take a stuffed animal from you or something?

    Got injured on a freak play... got re-injured because he rushed back. Got re-re-injured because of what? Infection, poorly performed surgery, poor rehab regimenet, freak issue again? Either way, seems like he'll be just fine once he gets past this stuff. He could probably lose a thumb and still be a top 25 TE in the league. Underrated blocker.

    Gonzalez is pretty much the Jerry Rice of TEs.

    The best I ever saw play, certainly. And I saw a lot of him.

    Gates was a great one too. Both could get it done in the Red Zone. Spent a lot of time shaking my head as the Raiders tried to cover Gates.

    His longevity has been derailed a bit by injuries, but Gates was clearly the most explosive weapon at the TE position in football for the better part of a decade.

    It would be more of a joint issue not bone.

    Brady has got to be hating that he lost Welker.

    He was also considered damaged goods at the time he was drafted because of his back issues.

    I was thinking that too... but then I remembered that Brady has been Brady regardless of who his receivers were. He won super bowls with scrub receivers and made Deion Branch a superbowl MVP. This is why I consider Brady the #1 GOAT quarterback.

    Gonzalez is #45 on NFL Network Top 100 Greatest list, ahead of Kellen Winslow (behind John Mackey). Ahead of legends like Earl Campbell and Eric Dickerson. Sharpe didnt make the list. That was 3 seasons ago, might could get even more ranks higher ahead of Mackey if it was done today.

    Not saying that list is the end-all/be-all list but they notoriously ranked some "name" players pretty low on it, some who could be considered overrated. (The fan vote had Steve Young #13, they had him #81) So they werent trying to please the fans too much. (The fan rank and NFL both had him at #45 so he might be the most appropriately ranked guy on there)

    Sad to see because he seems like a genuine likeable character for the game. Lives hard. Plays hard. Perfect for the NFL. but not eveybody is made to last. We'll see how he bounces back.
