Can one of our resident cop apologists defend this guy being so fearful for his life, when he apparently had time to return to his car, retrieve his weapon, and shoot the dog from the other side of the fence?

Here's another article. Some salient details:

Perhaps if we wait for more information to come out, we'll discover that the dog was reaching for a weapon. Or maybe it just didn't comply quickly enough. Or perhaps the officer thought that he had retrieved a taser from his car when it was actually an AR-15.

From the quotes provided above the family seems calm and fairly well composed. If some dude came to my house and murdered one of my dogs, I would be flipping my s***, cop or not.

If anybody ever hurt one of my dogs I would make it life's mission to destroy theirs.

I thought maybe the dog was freely roaming and a danger... but the dog was inside a fence. What harm could it have done inside a fence to the cop outside? And if they need to get in there... there are plenty of other non-lethal ways to handle the dog.

Okay, after reading a third article I found one clarification that makes this story (only slightly) less outrageous. Apparently the cop shot the dog with his sidearm, then returned to his vehicle to get the AR-15 to finish the job (in front of all the children).

    Which... Is still really bad.

I'm missing something ... how does that make it any less outrageous?

I had originally interpreted it as that he claimed to shoot the dog in self-defense, despite having had time to walk back to his car and grab the gun. Turns out he only had time to do that after shooting the dog the first time.

    So. There's that.

I'm not sure how I would react. I love my dog so much, if anybody hurt him for no reason I'd definitely would lose it.

I haven't read the thread yet. But I have a question.

Why does your thread start with [Cops gonna Cop]?

    Are all cops the same?

I find the news stories where cops kill someone's dog to be less defended than when a citizen is shot and killed.

    Wonder why that is?

The dog had a "wide set nose".

Yes, it is very telling. Where are the posters saying "Maybe he went too far, but the cop gave this dog what it deserved."
