[rquoter]Now this would certainly shake things up a little bit.

Back in the middle of December, the Big Ten publicly acknowledged that expansion was officially on the table. Almost immediately, names like Missouri, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati and the like were mentioned as possibilities.

Based on at least one report, you can push those little minnows to the shallow end of the pool for now. The conference has its eyes on a whale of a school.

According to a report in the Lawrence Journal-World, and citing a source with ties to the conference, the Big Ten and Texas have engaged in "preliminary exchanges" about the Big 12 school switching leagues and joining an expanded Big Ten.

"There have been preliminary exchanges between the Big Ten and Texas," the source told the Journal-World on Wednesday. "People will deny that, but it's accurate."

With the exception of Notre Dame, landing Texas would be far and away the biggest get for the Big Ten. Given the eyeballs the state of Texas would bring to the Big Ten Network, you could even make a pretty good argument that they would be a bigger get than the Irish.

As for the geographic distance between the current member schools and Texas, the Journal-World writes that "[t]ravel costs, in terms of money and fatigue, make Texas seem on the surface like a stretch, but TV revenue would more than make up for the fatigue factor."

Given the conference's own time table -- they said in January that a decision on whether to expand would take anywhere from 12 to 18 months -- this is obviously very preliminary.

But, still, the idea of Texas moving to the Big Ten would certainly send a major tremor through the college football world in general, and the Big 12 specifically. Especially if the rumors come to fruition and Colorado bolts for the Pac-10.

One thing seems certain in all of this: the landscape of the game is almost certain to look much different in two years than it does right now.[/rquoter]

I understand why they would want Texas because of the revenue from TV and the whole opening up a new market but God would that be stupid from pretty much every other angle. Texas has rivalries built up for years with schools like Oklahoma, A&M, Tech, etc. and have added to that with Kansas and K State as well as Missouri. Outside of Ohio State, what matchup with a Big 10 school would be compelling for Texas? Michigan?? I guess..whatever.

This whole problem would be solved if Notre Dame would get over themselves and accept the fact that they are the most LOGICAL fit to join the Big Ten (actually Big 11). Regardless of who they get, I wonder if they will change the conference name to represent something about 12 teams or just leave it as the "Big 10".

The Big XII has one of the worst TV "contracts" ever. Texas could be using this as a scare tactic for TV revenue/contracts in the future.

my dream scenario would be colorado to pac-10, mizzou to big 10 and tcu and uh to big 12. move ou and osu to north division leaving an all-texas south.

Nice. Big 10 takes a team from Big 12, and we get two Big 11s. Got to average things out you know. :)

Would the prospects that sign with Texas like this? Playing the likes of Michigan, Oh St, Penn State would be intriguing, but we already have BlowU, Okie Lite, and Ags

It could happen, the only thing Texas cares about is the money. Texas killed the Southwest conference and said goodbye to old rivals like SMU, TCU, Houston, and Rice, and it didn't bother the Longhorns one little bit.

Texas would quickly throw A&M, Tech, Baylor and anyone else under the bus for a few extra dollars. They've done it in the past and they would do it again.

If you look at from an academic standpoint, rather than a football one, it makes a lot more sense. Texas fits in much better with the caliber of schools in the Big 10 than it does currently in the Big 12. We would go from the best University in the Big 12, with really only A&M close to us, to a middle of the pack university in the Big 10. This would open up all kinds of doors for researching funds. So monetarily, when you factor in the new research money as well as a much improved TV deal, this makes a lot of sense for Texas.

Now, I'm not quite sold on November games in Pennsylvania, Michigan, or Wisconsin. But if we somehow can keep annual rivalry games with Oklahoma and Texas A&M, this would be hard to pass up as a football fan, as well as a supporter of my university as a whole.

The Big 12 itself is a young conference, but destroying over 100 years worth of rivalries with both OU and A&M would be awful.

This is just a play to get bigger TV contracts for the Big 12.

This would be a god-send, but it will never happen.

And just how would this have any effect on the Texas-OU rivalry? Last time I checked...they've only been in the same conference since 1996.

To be honest, this might be another reason we would want to leave. We have our normal, understandable, rivalries in OU and A&M, but pretty much the whole rest of the conference blames Texas for ruining their respective conferences. Nebraska, Colorado, Missouri, Tech, & Baylor (among others) all have an intense hatred for all things Longhorn. There is no sense of conference loyalty, especially when it comes to Texas, and maybe the higher ups would like to experience that.

As much as people may want to deny it, Texas is the most recognizable brand in college football. If I had to bet, I would say the Big 10, or any other conference, would welcome the burnt orange with open arms. Why stay in a conference that hates you, when you could go someplace where people are excited to have you?

Using that logic then Duke, Northwestern, Rice, and Vanderbilt should all be in a conference together.

Won't happen. Don't ignore the words "initial" and "prelim".

Any other conference would indeed welcome Texas, but Texas doesn't care if they are liked or disliked. They only care about the money.

They've only been in the same conference since '96, but they've played each other annually for over 100 years and at the Cotton Bowl since 1937 link

And how would Texas leaving the conference that currently has OU as a member prevent them from doing what they did every year before 1996?

Edit: I'm a Texas alumnus who graduated before the creation of the Big XII. I'm grossly familiar with the rivalry between the two schools. I fail to see why they have to continue to be in the same conference when it seems to have worked quite well the other way for nearly a century.

For real. If two schools want to play each other, they'll make it happen. Conference play is only part of the season.
