Its not a simple question, probably why it hasn't been part of the full census since 1950. The census is intended to count all people, not all citizens, in the United States.

Worse, your suggestion (people boycotting the census, or not answering the question) defeats the purpose of having a census. The information gathered would be incorrect, and thus the usage of that information will be flawed and likely challenged in court.

    Here's what I posted:

And a tweet by Kyle Griffin:

    trump has said:

In direct defiance of congress, which has role to provide oversight as a co-equal branch of government.

I'll just counter that if people are legally living in the country, regardless of citizenship status, they should want to participate. Any attempt to persecute legal residents using this information would and should get shot down in court pretty quickly, and I'd wager even using it to round up illegals would get blocked as well. With all this uproar, the perception (valid or not) is that there are even more people here illegally than commonly thought. I will, however, concede that it is unfortunate how the census has devolved into a political bludgeon.

Yes and the Kyle Griffin tweet is 100% false.....

Gore was told he's not allowed to have his lawyer by Cummings and the DoJ won't let him testify without one. You can't force someone to testify without a lawyer obviously, so Cummings cancelled the testimony but had journos spit out non-sense and you ate it up.

You then post garbage after about fighting subpeonas being illegal..

Just look at the picture of Kyle Griffin.

    Subpoenas.

What is false about Griffin's tweet? Again, I quote it:

He is refusing to testify. The committee wants to question him about the census question. And congress can hold him in contempt.

And if you are questioning the "no counsel" excuse... if Cummings allows the presence of a DOJ counsel and gore agrees to testify, what then? My bet... he still refuses to testify, and the "no attorney present" was just an excuse. But that has to play out. Until then, trump's direction to his people to all refuse to cooperate because "Democrats want to win in 2020" reinforces the belief that he is not testifying to obstruct congress.

    hes not refusing to testify....

The attorney general has said he must have his lawyer present and Cummings has told him hes not allowed to have his lawyer present. Therefore Cummings cancelled the hearing. you cant hold someone in contempt when CUmmings cancelled the hearing. you also cant deny someone a lawyer and then hodl them in contempt...

you are so damn ignorant. Gore already agreed to testify . HE asked permission from the DoJ. DoJ said 'sure but have your lawyer present'.

Cummings is the one cancelling the hearing.... not Gore

What you should be asking, is why Gore is not being allowed to have a lawyer.

It appears that the Committee isn't denying personal counsel but rather DOJ counsel (as per Committee rules), but Cummings even has accommodated the request by allowing DOJ counsel to be in a nearby room and allowing gore to request the opportunity to consult with the DOJ counsel.

    Here's Cummings' letter...

mounting evidence of Trump WH's push to rig the 2020 census

A secret trove of documents was revealed Thursday showing that the Trump administration added a citizenship question to the 2020 census as part of a plan to change how voting districts are drawn in the United States—

a plan hatched to benefit “non-Hispanic whites.”
The documents include proof that Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and his underlings lied to Congress about the process of adding the citizenship question,

records of meetings between Ross and White House advisors Steve Bannon and Kris Kobach
    held well before
    • the Department of Justice requested the citizenship question,
    • and reams of expert testimony saying that while there was no reason to collect citizenship data to enforce the VRA, there was no doubt that asking about citizenship would decrease Hispanic response rates, in violation of the Constitution’s Enumeration Clause.

And here's a shocker, trump's admin misusing published documents to argue for their citizenship question in the census. The author of the research brief and subsequent article objects to the trump admin misusing his research. In his words, the addition of a citizenship question in the census is laughable and "The idea wasn't remotely on anyone's mind because it was inconceivable the Department would do something so reckless and destructive to the Census."

Can't believe this issue has been going on over a year since I started this thread. But regardless of the citizenship question, the above quoted part of my OP is the part I think about the most. When they made the rules on census-taking, there was no recognized commercial value to the personal data. Now are most powerful companies are built on collecting personal data. And the census requires by law a lot of valuable personal information. We really need to rewrite the rules for the information age.

And here's why trump and the white house were nervous about kobach testifying... kobach let slip he discussed adding the citizenship question into the census during the time trump was campaigning for the presidency. This contradicts commerce secretary ross' testimony.
