Can we at least agree now that coaches don't really matter that much?

When the Rockets fired Adelman last offseason, I remember getting into some heated arguments regarding the value of Adelman. I thought he was a great coach, but didn't think it would really matter in the grand scheme of things. But the consensus opinion seemed to be that the Rockets would flounder without such a HOF caliber coach.

Since then we've hired McHale, the guy some fans even argue means that we're tanking. We changed Hayes with Dalembert. More or less a lateral move. We changed from CBud/Battier to Parsons. Also more or less a lateral move for the sake of this this season. We had more injuries this year(KMart, PPat, Lowry) but also a breakout player in Dragic. And we got Camby at the deadline. Overall, roughly the same talent.

And we get to today. Regardless of whether or not we win these last two games, or get into the first round, it seems that changing a HOF coach for the worst coaching candidate in history of mankind didn't really make a difference. Good or Bad. If this season has confirmed more clearly than anything, it's that you need players. Plain and simple.

This whole season should have an asterisks. No summer league. No training camp. No off days. I hope the only conclusion wrt coaching and players we can draw is that we should not draw any conclusions.

The only time coaches don't matter is in the All Star game.

Adelman's teams have improved records every where he went, despite injuries. Trailblazers, Kings, and Rockets all got better. The Warriors didn't go anywhere, but nobody was saving that franchise. The Kings looked terrible with Reggie Theus. Camby and Dalembert are an upgrade over undersized Hayes and Jordan Hill. Parsons is an upgrade over Budinger and Battier. Battier went on to be a bench player again.

Coach Thibs has made a huge difference for the Bulls, making them one of the best defensive teams in the league.

I we say the coach doesn't matter, it's like saying hiring Reggie Theus won't make the Rockets worse.

Coaches matter to a point. On teams with mediocre talent like ours their impact is probably not substantial. A great coach would get us, what 3 more wins in a 66 game season? The greatest coaches had GREAT talent and their skills come into play in managing talent, not necessarily coaching. The exception is probably Popovich who, unfortunately, coaches and has great (now good) talent.

    Coach does matter, a lot.
otherwise, anyone like yourself can be a NBA coach too, in a season not tanking.

Let's see the Rockets add Parson Dally but lose Adelman and everyone plays worse and they miss the playoffs (probably). Minnesota adds Adelman and Minny improves.
