The Thai thread got me thinking, and I'll be honest I can find no shortage of great Thai, Vietnamese, Japanese and even Korean. But good Chinese escapes me. Chinese on the level of Thai Gourmet or Pho Binh (places that use chicken that tastes like chicken).

Anyone have any good recommendations? I used to love Ming's on Montrose but they closed it down and have no idea what the lady ended up doing but have missed it ever since.

you should just bump the Chinese food thread. Lot of quality there, somewhere. Maybe it's split into many threads. Thai-only was more rare of a thread request.

TJin in Brazos Town Center imo is pretty good.

Not sure how authentic it is though....

I have read that Mala Sichuan is the best, but have not been.

They just opened a Montrose location (have a Chinatown one too).

    PF Changs

On a related note, why have I never seen an Asian person at PF Changs? Is there something I don't know. It's a great place. Close to my house.

    Panda Express.

The only place that uses panda that actually tastes like panda.

I thought the same, their are mostly whites and blacks. Could it be that the place is overpriced and they would rather just make the food themselves rather the pay to much just to eat mediocre Chinese food.

I thought we were blessed in Houston with great Asian cuisine (and we are), but then I spent some time exploring SoCal between San Diego and LA. Yowza.........they got it good. Somewhat off topic (but only by a single border), but can you find really good Banh mi Bo Kho in Houston?

You'd be the one to tell us.

Also, somewhat off topic -- Japenese Ramen noodles. Ramen noodles and broth places are starting to pop up. Have you been to Tiger Den on Bellaire (about a block or so from Mala)?

Would be great if there was a place that served authentic sichaun food. Been to Cheng Du and Chonghing and the food is divine. Mala's is good if you've never ate real sichuan food, but if you have, it's just okay.

Houston definitely has some great vietnamese food. For banh mi, I go to Thanh Noi Sandwiches(Cash only) in Bellaire. For Bo Kho, you can pretty much find pretty good bowls of it at any Pho place. You just have to find out what place has the best for you, cant go wrong with that dish though. You can also order it with either french bread to sop up the stew, as a noodle dish or with rice.

As far as Chinese food goes, for real authentic Chinese food, my favorite place is Confucius on Bellaire. Please do not visit this place thinking theres General Tso's chicken or any kind of sweet and sour dipping sauces. The seafood is what I mainly go for but all their dishes are really good. Language sometimes can be a barrier for only english speakers but the menu has english descriptions.

Also, never go into an Asian restaurant expecting top notch service. You go for the FOOD, not the experience, ambiance or service. If you keep that in mind, youll enjoy your food a lot more. If you need something, just get up and ask your waiter for whatever you need. Its not that inconvenient. Lots of good restaurants up and down Bellaire.
