I had high hopes for Wallace, he was described as a hitting machine. But how major league pitching exposes these lower level phenoms. Feast or famine guys like Singleton l, Wallace, etc. abound as top prospect guys. Sad to describe them, but they are like fools gold; that’s why having an elite GM in today’s game is essential.
We on the Second Chance Singleton train or no? Talented, in the prime years of his physicality, low mileage, maybe learned some life lessons bumping around Mexico. Two game sample he’s a massive upgrade at 1b.
I am so happy for Singleton. He seems to have gone through a lot growing, and he may yet exhibit all of his natural talent at the ML level. There was a time most of us had him penciled in as our 1st baseman of the future. It sucked when Singleton took all the heat after the Astros gave him the 30+ million dollar contract with 10 guaranteed; I remember MLB player were furious. But guys like Matt Dominguez who had similar opportunities denied their own opportunity at being millionaires, nevertheless proved how smart Singleton was - now Singleton has a chance at some redemption on the ML baseball field. When he faltered, the Astros were scrambling and went hard after Jose Abreu, before he chose the White Sox over the 3X100+ loss Astros. And the Astros were eventually able to get Yuli Gurriel to have their championship runs! Forward to now, and when the Astros finally got Abreu, he’s been a complete negative WAR guy; perhaps Singleton will finally get his extended run as a formidable power source at 1st base and take over the 1st base duties. But Singleton looks honed in, and it’s going to be spectacular if he can stay focused and can keep up with the wit of MLB pitching scouts, who are on notice to expose holes in Singleton’s swing.
