http://espn.go.com/mlb/news/2000/0605/569061.html Could be playing tomorrow against the cubs. I think this is a good pickup, Castilla has better defense than Truby. ------------------ "Break off the block like Maurice Green" --- Steve Francis President of the Moochie Norris fan club.
What are you smokin'...the only reason the Astros are getting Castilla is because Truby is not a consistent hitter...but his fielding has always been consistent. Castilla brings consistency on both part (although he hasn't hit much in the past few years). ------------------ ------------------ Hakeem: "Exit Suugar Lan"
Castilla brings consistency?? Consistently injured maybe, or consistently striking out. He's a bum.. a washed up bum.. ------------------ My dream job is to be a Houston Rockets towel boy.
I hope Castilla is able to return to his previous form in EFUS. . . imagine that!!!! ------------------ "Up and down, inside out, outside in, some you lose some you win" -- DMB -> "Sweet Up and Down"
Truby is on pace for 25-30 errors this year. Of the players in the National League with at least 40 chances at 3rd base, Truby is ranked 11th. His fielding percentage is .924 which is similar to his percentage from last year. In that respect he is consistent, but has certainly shown to be a mediocre defensive 3rd baseman thus far in the major leagues. Castilla's percentage this year is a bit better than Truby's (.934), but his career total is .963 which is quite respectable. For comparison, Caminiti is at .946. I suggested the Astros sign Castilla when he was first released. It makes economic sense to take a chance as the investment is only $200,000. He is a FA after this season so there is no long term commitment. If he doesn't work out, simply release him. ------------------
Screw Castilla...call up Ginter and let him play third. Castilla is a whiner and, as someone said earlier, washed up. He is not a notable improvement to Truby. If Truby isn't the guy, let's see if Ginter is instead of wasting our time with Castilla. The ONLY reason to get Castilla is to keep the Cubs from solving their third-baseman dilemma. But I think ultimately the Cubs won't stay in the race, so it's a waste of time and money. ------------------

Last time Castilla played in an extremely hitter-friendly stadium (99), he hit 30 bombs and drove in 100. 2000 was his first bad year. Why not see if he still has something left? Ginter will still be there midseason if Castilla hasn't shown anything by then. I don't see the downside. ------------------ We used to laugh at Grandpa when he'd head off and go fishing. But we wouldn't be laughing that evening when he'd come back with some w**** he picked up in town.
Actually if we sign him I think all it costs us is $200,000. The d-rays have to pay the rest of his $7.25 mil. salary. If he does pan out and plays well at Enron then in a few months everybody says hey what a bargain. If he doesn't then cut him free and call up Ginter. Ginter has NOT been playing 3rd base in AAA. He has been playing 2nd and outfield. The regular 3rd baseman for New Orleans is Morgan Ensberg who has put up good power numbers. ------------------
This looks like a win/win situation for the Stros. Of course we're assuming Drayton is willing to shell out the 200 K for Castilla. ------------------ "norm, would you like to buy an indian scalp ? Lets bring up Morgan Ensberg then ------------------ "Facts do not cease to exist because they are ignored."- (Aldous Huxley)
Is it just me, or does this feel an awful lot like the Mo Taylor signing? You know, great if he signs, particularly since he's cheap, but we'll DEFINITELY live if he doesn't. Not quite earth-shattering, but not "YAWN!" either. ------------------
This is now official. And we got him for $153,000 http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news/ap/20010515/ap-astros-castilla.html CK ------------------ CC.Net Sim Homepage For stats, standings and team information. [This message has been edited by Castor27 (edited May 15, 2001).]
It is interesting that they sent Truby to the minors to clear the roster spot. I was anticipating them releasing Charlie Hayes. ------------------
Me too. Maybe they should send Hayes down and bring up Morgan Ensberg as Castilla's backup! ------------------ "Blues is a Healer" --John Lee Hooker
There's not much room on the Astros for a guy who can't hit. I'm happy about the signing for the reasons people have been giving: he'll almost certainly be an improvement, and there's not much to lose. ------------------ I would believe only in a God who could dance. - Friedrich Nietzsche Boston College - NCAA Hockey National Champions 2001
Astros are up now 6-5. Thanx to a Solo Homer from Vinny. Its top 6th, Castilla has 2 runs, 2 hits an 2 RBIS. Not bad for first game. ------------------ "Break off the block like Maurice Green" --- Steve Francis President of the Moochie Norris fan club.
Extra innings, Jeff Bagwell with a huge defensive play in the bottom of the 9th. it looks like this Castilla signing may work out for the Stros. ------------------ Charles Barkely on the Raptors defeating the Knicks in Round 1 :"I think it was the Lord.
