    Astros sign reliever Rick White
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press
HOUSTON (AP) _ Reliever Rick White signed with the NL Central-leading Houston Astros on Wednesday night, less than a week after being let go by the Chicago White Sox.

White was 1-2 with one save and a 6.61 ERA in 34 games for the White Sox. The righty was designated for assignment last Friday night.

``This was a move to pick up an experienced arm in the middle of a pennant race. He has experience pitching in a pennant race and in post season,'' Astros general manager Gerry Hunsicker said.

``This will give us more weapons out of the bullpen. If our starters can go five innings, then we will have several weapons to use to get us to Billy Wagner,'' he said. ``This was a no-lose situation. We didn't have to give up any talent.''

Houston optioned pitcher Kirk Saarloos to Triple-A New Orleans and placed pitcher Rodrigo Rosario on the 60-day disabled list.

Great Pick-up, IMO. Good Job Gerry.

How old is he? Isn't he about mid-30's?

The Astros HAD to release someone from their 40 man roster to make room for Fernandez. Sending Saarloos to New Orleans would NOT have accomplished that. Designating a player for assignment WOULD accomplish that. They did not designate Munro for Saarloos' benefit, they did it for Fernandez benefit.

People who are still saying that just aren't paying attention. Yeah, his ERA is still pushing 6.00, but that's mostly due to his two horrific starts early in the season. I can't find his relief-only stats, but, last I heard, his ERA out of the pen was around 3.80. Not outstanding, but definitely respectable for a guy whose main role has been mop-up long relief (and also better than the guy we just picked up). The guy has had some memorable appearances in close games as well. I seem to remember him striking out Juan Gonzalez to get out of a jam at the Ballpark and his name is in the history books as one of the pitchers in our six-man no-hitter.

If you got to espn.go.com, click on mlb, click on players, enter Saarloos and then click on splits, you can get different breakdowns. Included is the fact that his relief ERA is now 3.48 and it is 13.50  as a starter.

I hope the Saarloos as a starter experiment is over now. Those quotes he had after he was moved to the pen said a lot about his character, I think. He said he liked being a reliever better, because when he knew 4 days in advance when he was going to start, he got all worked up and nervous about it. Out of the pen, he doesn't have time to worry. I don't know why he did so much better in the minors as a starter, but if he really doesn't want to be a starter, then I don't think he will ever be decent one, since he doesn't have the desire. I like him out of the pen, I just hope he stays there.

When Saarloos had his last start he seemed quite upbeat and thought he had dicovered what his problem was. His solution in that start was to pitch from the windup (as most relievers do). It did not help.

Let's not forget that this is only his 3rd season of pro ball (including the minors). He is still young (24) and has a lot of time to continue his development.

610 just said there was confusion with whites contract, and the deal is off. He is still property of the white soxs, and sarloos is back in the big leagues..

I got this yesterday from foxsports.com yesterday:

A procedural hang-up has delayed Houston’s signing of Rick White. Until that’s resolved—and it should be soon—Kirk Saarloos will remain with the big league club.

Just to clarify, most relievers prefer to pitch from the stretch, not the windup. Starters prefer a windup, until someone gets on base.

Saarloos Sucks any way you slice it.

I strongly dislike pitchers who do not throw strikes. You can only fool ML hitters once or maybe twice max.

Kirk Sucks. Hopefully he will improve soon or go back to selling cars.

Yeah, this young pitcher sucked in his 2nd year as well:

    6 Wins 14 Losses 5.61 ERA

What a bum...any way you slice it. Wait, now how many Cy-Youngs did he win again?

    How bout this loser:

    2nd year: 12-15, 5.10

Interestingly enough, also pitched his second year in the bigs for the Cubbies in '87, same as your guy.

    Any guesses?
