I just want to go back to the days when 40+ firearm deaths a day never made the news.

I am almost certain that banning semiautomatic pistols with extended barrels and buttstocks will solve this problem.

If all you want to do is criminalize the mass shooting perpetrators before they commit a crime, that is an excellent way to go about doing it.

Mass shootings will still continue to happen.
It will have almost no impact on the 95% of gun related deaths.

Here is an obvious dirty little secret that short sighted people choose to ignore: No politician wants to seriously deal with gun control. Its a lot easier to call for bans, which obviously wont happen, instead of actually dealing with the gun culture in america. Their ignorant constituents blindly follow the irrational logic.

What we need is a gun permit system. The easiest way to segway into this system is to require individual to maintain a gun permit to own or operate a semi automatic rifle.... not ban them. A little food for thought ... instead of jumping to the durr durr lets ban and make all mass shootings go away.

Interesting new study out today, worth a read. (Column by the author of a new study covering the 1960s to present.)

@Space Ghost is right of course, about mass shootings being a tiny fraction of our gun deaths, but the phenomenon is accelerating to a disturbing degree, w a significant copycat cultural effect.

    https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2019-09-01/mass-shooting-data-odessa-midland-increase

In some sense, the AR-15 is, yes, good at killing, but it is also now what these hate-filled sickos see as the expected weapon.

    This is very telling;
Gun control, which is something I am very much for, would reduce the massive amounts of day to day gun violence.

Mass shootings are not a gun control issue. It is very evident. Nearly every shooter had acquired the weapon from a legal source. To overcome the massive amounts of resistance from those who are staunchly against progressive gun control measures, politicians will have to get wiser on how to deal with the issue...if they are genuine about the issue.

The internet has made this topic more deadlier than ever. Its a lot easier for a very few anarchist , hell even foreign actors like Russia, to encourage and push these people to the limit. We have largely ignored mental health over the last couple of decades. The internet has evolved our species into something very different and we have not done a very good job to keep up with the long term effects.

I am all for the 2nd amendment and I am prior military...

There is no way in HELL that the AR-15 or M-16 is needed on the streets.

So i'm truly not understanding the issue.. No one is saying to take your guns away.. Basically saying there is no need to have a military style gun...

AR-15 is a little bit like pit bulls. Nice, sweet dogs if well raised, but every douchebag with a tiny penis gets one to look tough and abuses them and they get a bad rap.

I dont think there is anything inherent in the AR-15 that can't be done with 100 other guns out there. Ban 'em and people will switch to Mini -14s or FAL knock offs and on and on until they are killing kids with FN-49's and SKS's and rusty M1 carbines from granddad's attic.

But, as they say, "this is why we can't have nice things". You are doing it to yourself, America, and when new draconian bans eventually come into effect the NRA types should be looking in the mirror as to why it happened (but of course wont).

Concerning gun permit system and politician... look below. Plenty of them call for a licensing system (among many other ideas). It's the #1 gun policy for a few of them as well (Warren, Yang, Booker).

Current DEM candidates that have expressed support for a licensing system, but hasn't listed them on their site: Sanders, Buttigieg, Harris

AFAIK, these politicians have NOT support or will not support a gun licensing system:
    - Among DEM candidate for president: Biden, Bennet, Gillibrand --> telling TBH
    - All GOP politicians

    https://marchforourlives.com/peace-plan/
#1 - A Higher Standard for National Gun Ownership
If we require a license to drive a car, we should certainly require a license to own a gun.

For decades, the NRA and gun lobby have focused on a singular goal: to keep the standards for gun ownership dangerously low. To make a sizable dent in reducing gun violence, we need to do the complete opposite: we need to raise the bar for gun ownership and responsibility in America. This begins with what a wide body of research and international precedents tell us is essential to reducing gun violence: a federal system of gun licensing. The facts are clear: a comprehensive system of gun licensing reduces illegal gun trafficking, cuts down on gun homicides, and reduces gun suicides.

My Plan for Gun Violence Prevention by Elizabeth Warren
Creating a federal licensing system. States with strict licensing requirements experience lower rate of gun trafficking and violence. A license is required to drive a car, and Congress should establish a similarly straightforward federal licensing system for the purchase of any type of firearm or ammunition.

    https://www.yang2020.com/policies/gun-safety/
Promote a stringent licensing system, with a 5-year renewal requirement, for gun ownership.
    • Anyone desiring a license would need to:
      • Go through a federal background check.
        • Anyone with a history of violence, domestic abuse, or violent mental illness would not be allowed to hold a license.
        • Interview with a federal agent, who has limited discretion on granting the license.
      • Pass a basic hunting or firearm safety class.
      • Provide a receipt for an appropriately-sized gun locker, or trigger locks (tax deductible).
    • Individual states will determine their concealed carry/open carry laws, and reciprocity will not be federally enforced.
Cory's Plan to end gun violence epidemic
Keep guns out of the wrong hands with gun licensing:

Just as a driver’s license demonstrates a person’s eligibility and proficiency to drive a car, a gun license demonstrates that a person is eligible and can meet certain basic safety and training standards necessary to own a gun.

Here’s how it would work: Individuals could seek a gun license at a designated local office, widely available in urban and rural areas, similar to applying for or renewing a passport. They would submit fingerprints, provide basic background information, and demonstrate completion of a certified gun safety course.

The FBI would then verify submission of required materials and run a comprehensive background check before issuing a federal gun license, after which the license-holder could freely purchase and own firearms. The license would be valid for up to five years before renewal with regular, automatic checks to flag non-compliance with license terms.

Recognizing that many states have already implemented state licensure programs, states could continue to do so, provided that they meet baseline federal standards.

    https://issues.juliancastro.com/disarming-hate/
Require a license to purchase firearms.

This policy will ensure gun buyers have passed a background check before they own a gun, which research suggests leads to fewer gun homicides and suicides.
    • Establish a federal firearm licensing program through the ATF that requires registering fingerprints, an FBI background check and law enforcement interview, and the completion of a federally certified gun safety course, before allowing an individual to purchase and own firearms.
    https://betoorourke.com/gun-violence/
Create a nationwide gun licensing system and registry.
Beto will work with Congress to create a nationwide gun licensing system that will ensure individuals seeking a gun undergo an assessment by law enforcement and a background check. Individuals must be 21 years old to receive a license, will be required to complete a certified gun safety training, and will need to renew their licenses every five years. Individuals will also be required to register their guns through a registry and all new handguns will be microstamped. In recognition of the country’s long hunting tradition, those under 21 with hunting licenses will be able to lawfully possess firearms for hunting. States will have the flexibility to administer their own licensing systems, allowing them to set higher standards. Where a state does not have a system in place, the federal government will administer the system.

    You want a gun?

    No problem!

There will be a requirement for classes to own the gun, yearly permits and registration to show you still possess the gun, gun owner insurance that must be valid for as long as you own that particular firearm, no individual sales or gun show loop holes. Also the level of taxes you pay each year increase based on the number of guns you own.

If you meet these standards you are free to own firearms.

This is coming from someone that owns firearms.

Trump Downplays Texas Mass Shooting Rampage: 'It Could Have Been Worse'

Donald Trump on Sunday sought to downplay the mass shooting that left at least seven dead and a baby shot in the face near Odessa, Texas.

Donald Trump on Sunday sought to downplay the mass shooting that left at least seven dead near Odessa, Texas. A 17 month-old baby was also shot in the face, and hospitalized in stable condition.

"First responders, law enforcement, the police, the FBI, Governor Abbott, incredible the job they did," Trump opined to reporters on the White House lawn. "It is tragic. But they did it an incredible job under the circumstances. Another very sick person, so I just want to thank you everybody involved."

"As bad as it was, it could have been worse, but it was certainly bad, very very sad situation," he added.
