ESPN: Thomas has a basketball background and an intriguing skill set. He was moved outside to receiver out of necessity in 2017, but the reality is he's an in-line tight end prospect. He has some splash plays on tape that draw you in, but there's not enough consistency to his game.

Rotoworld: Texans selected Mississippi State TE Jordan Thomas with the No. 211 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. Thomas (6’6/265) was a lightly-used tight end on the Bulldogs’ roster before wide receiver injuries forced him into 2017 action and Thomas capitalized for a career-best 22/263/12.0/3 receiving line. Exposed as a fourth-percentile SPARQ athlete at the Combine, Thomas is a long shot for an extended big-league career.

CBS Sports: (A-) Has above-average blocking ability. Imposing size. Flashed some receiving ability. Good prospect to take a flier on this late for Deshaun Watson. | Separation tight end with fluid movement skills at all levels of the field. Mostly reliable hands. Willing but lacking power as an in-line blocker. Yards-after-the-catch H-back type ideally suited for today's NFL.

SI: Scouting Report: He’s bordering on offensive tackle size (he played OT, as well as defensive end and basketball in junior college), and Thomas has some explosive athletic traits to go with it. He shows good burst at the snap, and has more speed than you’d expect from a man his size, capable of running away from defenders up the seam. He’s exceedingly raw as a receiver, and not a natural pass-catcher. He also could stand to be a little nastier as a blocker—he’ll steamroll small defensive backs, but too often plays high and struggles when picking on someone his own size. There are a lot of rough edges, but there aren’t many players this big who can move like Thomas can. That alone will keep him in the league for a few years at least.

    Draft Projection: Rounds 6-7

    Overview
From a football standpoint, there isn't enough there to warrant a draft pick, but Thomas has rare size, speed and athletic traits and that might be enough to hear his name called on Day 3 of the draft. Thomas played outside for the Bulldogs this year, but those days are over. He'll need simpler routes as a tight end and has to be coached up on how best to utilize his frame to wall off defenders. A team could add Thomas with the idea of converting him to defensive end if it doesn't work out at tight end.

    Strengths
    • Freaky size-speed combination
    • Big and athletic
    • Teams will be intrigued by his background which included junior college basketball and reps at not only tight end, but also defensive end and offensive tackle
    • Comes off the line of scrimmage with good forward lean and powerful drive into routes
    • May be too fast for some linebackers to handle down the field
    • Has size to plow through smaller defensive backs attempting to re-route him
    • Has size to overwhelm slot defenders on run plays
    Weaknesses
    • Attention comes from physical traits and not football play
    • Has just 31 college catches
    • Unable to find clean releases against press coverage
    • Routes are a mess
    • Struggles getting in and out of breaks and patterns don't fool defenders
    • Fights the football with his hands
    • Lacks functional ball skills down the field
    • Hasn't learned to use his massive frame as a weapon yet

    Sources Tell Us
"There is no way I would put my name on him to my boss. No way. I don't think he can be trusted on or off the field. You see flashes but I think that's all it is. Flashes." -- AFC team regional scout

    From Draft Insiders Digest...

    15 Jordan Thomas #83 – Mississippi St 6-5 265 – Sp. 4.75 Rating 60
Huge raw athlete came on over his senior season seeing extensive action and showing the skill set to become an NFL starter. Only a one-year starter after a JC career where he was the #1 tight end prospect. Big frame with long arms (34 1/8”) and huge (11”) hands. He moves well for a player of his dimensions and was used at tight end and wide receiver. Agile tough versatile tight end became a reliable performer over his short career, making nice late progress. Improved as an inline performer both as a blocker and getting off the line as a receiver. Good size and deceptive speed with further upside to become a potential NFL quality backup. Developing all around receiving skills to compete for time as a big H-Back or blocking #2 type. Quick on snap and uses long arms and technique to gain an advantage. Plays with leverage. Can be an effective blocker including inline or flexed, pass or run blocking. Adequate speed and acceleration with a burst off the line initially into routes to gain separation out of his breaks. Reliable route runner with dependable hands and footwork. Able to find soft spots in short zones and reads coverage fairly well and use his big body to shield off defenders. Lacks second gear to make yardage in open field. Emerging red zone threat with ability to wall off defenders and provide a fine target. Good body control to high point and use his length to adjust to the ball with reliable hands and concentration to make tough catches. Shows good lateral agility to block on the move and fill an H-back role. Adept at combo blocks on defensive ends and gets to 2nd level adequately with the ability to fit on backers. Good length, marginal base to anchor vs big defenders. Developing hand usage to control and adjust to secondary moves. Could use a year in weight program to add strength necessary to be effective pro blocker. As a senior, he started 5 of 13 games and caught 22 passes for 263 yards and 3 TDs. As a junior, he played in 12 games and had 9 catches for 48 yards and 1 TDs. At the NFL Combine, he ran a 4.74 time and did 16 reps with a 27” VL and 9’3” BJ. Added a 4.75 shuttle and a 7.50 three cone. Currently only an adequate blocker with developing receiving skills, though making fast progress. Developing talent to fill all the #2 roles. Moves fairly well for his size and movement skills to be effective. 4Good late round value as a high-level backup with the skill set to get better once he settles into an offense.

No I was more wondering why that's the second TE drafted with questionable blocking skills

But from his profile it sounds like he wasnt that bad and should be able to get coached up

Keep seeing contradicting scouring reports on this guy, some say good blocker limited receiving ability and others say better receiver than blocker. Looks like this guy could be a steal if his potential is reached.

As an aside, I think its interesting that we drafted two players from Stanford and two from MS St. Gaine might have a lot of confidence in his scouts working those teams.

Thomas is really an intriguing prospect because of his rare athletic gifts. If he's willing to put in the work, this guy could turn into the TE we've needed for years. Doubt it happens this year, but hopefully we'll see some big strides by next season. This was a perfect 6th round pick IMHO.

    This player has a chance,
    To start!

Can catch already, he play WR in college.

Now if he can be coached up to block a little he can be the replacement for Mr. Concussion.

Hope it works as it will be steal of draft even more that the 1st pick.

How can he be "freaky size-speed" with a fourth-percentile SPARQ?

Just another meaningless stat. All we need to know is that he 265 lbs and runs a 4.7-4.8. Which is pretty fast for that size.

In fact... Zierlein said he couldn't find footage of him blocking when he tried to write a scouting report about him. Not even from the slot and certainly not as a traditional TE. Dude is a 270lb WR.... Not that there is anything wrong with that...

He is a project as a tight end. Gaine said as much. He has the body type to be a good blocker and showed some in workouts. He is most likely a practice squad guy

For those who keep saying he is a WR, he only played a few games as one and that was done out of necessity.

Well, hope he has a better attitude than his brother Isaiah Thomas. Anyway I see a bust around his name.
