they could definitely challenge either team especially if they build on the sucess they just had with kyrie and hayward returning and continued improvement from tatum, jb, and rozier. they don't really need Anthony davis in that regard. they actually match up very well with both

J.R., thanks for doing the "team grouping." That was fun to look at.

I am sure the other teams he is negotiating with would love that list as well. It's a poker game, you try to keep your opponent guessing.

Who will be the best player this season? To get the final prediction, we asked our expert panel to vote on pairs of players.

We asked, "Which player will be better in 2018-19?" To decide, voters had to consider both the quality and the quantity of each player's contributions to his team's ability to win games.

    http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...debate-luka-doncic-carmelo-anthony-lonzo-ball

    5. Carmelo Anthony ranked No. 64 in last year's predictions, and he's outside the top 100 this year. Which of the following is most true?

    A. Those results were about right.

    B. Last year's ranking was too favorable.

    C. We are underrating Melo.

Tim MacMahon: I'll go with A. Melo is a former superstar in decline who needs to adapt his game to be an asset on a contender. He clearly thought his role in OKC negatively impacted his production, but he's at the point of his career where he needs to figure out how he can fit in, not expect to be a focal point. I'd love to see him redefine himself as a sixth man with the Rockets -- yeah, you, Melo -- a role that would make it easier to mask his defensive deficiencies.

    Royce Young: C. Blind taste-test here ...

A: 17.7 PPG on 44/33/64 shooting split plus 4.4 RPG

    B: 16.4 PPG on 40/36/77 plus 5.8 RPG

A is Andrew Wiggins, who ranked 71st, and B is Melo. Obviously age is a factor, and Melo is on a serious, apparently personally unaware decline, but he's still a productive player. He's not a good defender -- nor has he ever been -- and his habits can stall an offense. But there seems to be an idea that he's some detrimental NBA player, and that's just not the case. He's not a top-50 player anymore, and maybe not top 75, but now that he's on a minimum contract, it's hard to imagine many GMs taking some other top-100 players over him.

Chris Herring: Based on numbers alone, B. Carmelo's calling card has always been his offense, yet he had the worst field-goal percentage and worst true shooting percentage in the league last season among the 36 players who took 15 shots a game or more. His one-on-one defense was exploited time and again during the playoffs, where Utah did its best to force him into switch situations along the perimeter, prompting Billy Donovan to limit his playing time in the second halves of that series. He has a chance to be far better in Houston, but if this situation doesn't fit him well, it's hard to imagine that any situation would.

André Snellings: A. At this time last season, Anthony was a 33-year-old small forward who'd made his career as a scorer, going to a Thunder team that needed him to play power forward as a third option. Now he's a year older and joining a championship-caliber Rockets squad on which he could conceivably be the fifth option. Given his skillset and age, his roles have necessitated drops in his rankings that should be steeper this season than even a year ago.

Kevin Pelton: B. The concerns about Melo's game his ranking reflected were evident in the playoffs, when he struggled to contribute offensively in a complementary role and was targeted by the Utah Jazz on defense. Given how poorly Anthony shot on 3s, I think there's a good chance he rebounds this season, but he's still not likely to be a top-100 player.

Ooo, ooo ... I have a follow-up question: If 34-yr old Melo is a superstar in decline, explain 40yr old Nowitzki making Top 100.

    A. Those results were about right.

    B. Dirk would have dropped out, but he didn't get exposed in the playoffs last year, did he?!

    C. Got you to talk about it, amirite.

So, on ESPN Rank, 50-100, there wasn't ONE Rocket? Am I to guess that Harden, CP, Capela, Gordon are in the top 50? And then where do they place Tucker? I also didn't see Ariza/Luc in that tier either.

As for Melo. They probably overrated Melo last year (OK3 "Big Three") and are underrating him this season (Bill Simmons: Melo is washed) to "compensate." He is somewhere in the middle there.

SI had them all in the Top 50.

Looks like Celtics are going to have 7 players.

I think ESPN did a better job on some things, giving better value to 3D players, but I don't get the Kantar ranking, Redick jumping 22 spots, and Ball improving upon last year's clear overrating -- ranked 38 spots higher than SI's. Lulz. They have to keep Ball in the story.

If I remember correctly, SI had Tucker, Ariza and Luc in their 50-100 tier. And in ESPN's they are likely ALL out of that tier.

Ariza 77 (15 spot fall)... and Tucker 85. No Luc. It's in the OP.

All of Harden, Paul, Capela and EGo in the Top 50 on both (apparently).

Let's see if ESPN puts Gobert 21 spots higher than Capela, though. SI had him #14, yet talk about how important playoffs are if you get exposed ... and Capela/Rockets exposed him embarrassingly.

@J.R. I love how you group the teams together in those Top 100s.

Now we just need ESPN to finish up their list and then see a list of the Rockets grouped in each of the ESPN/CBS/SI lists.
