Study: Houston No. 7 best city in America, No. 31 in the world

By Jen Para – Web producer, Houston Business Journal
    8 hours ago

Houstonians sure know it, but now a study has made it official: Houston is one of the best cities in America and the world.

Houston ranked as the No. 7 best city in the U.S. and the No. 31 best city in the world on reports crafted by Vancouver, British Columbia-based Resonance Consultancy Ltd., a global adviser on tourism, real estate and economic development. In the 2018 “America’s Best Cities” report, the Bayou City earned high marks for its key institutions, attractions and infrastructure as well as its economic climate.

Click through the slideshow above to see the top 10 cities in the U.S., according to the report.

“Smart, skilled and soulful, Houston is the American city of the future,” the U.S. report stated, highlighting the city’s diversity and affordability. “And what (else) do you get? Among many other things, a food scene to rival any in the country.”

Resonance also lauded Houston’s upcoming spaceport, the Houston-Dallas high-speed rail project and the Innovation District coming to Midtown.

Although Hurricane Harvey devastated the area, the report stated that “city government is at the forefront of the resilience movement of the 21st century and is redefining how cities deal with these severe storm events.”

In particular, Resonance had high praise for the recently released “Plan Downtown: Converging Culture, Lifestyle & Commerce," a comprehensive plan to re-energize downtown Houston and improve upon its residential developments, green space, walkability and public transit.

To create the list of the 50 best cities in America, Resonance looked at 28 factors, which included user-generated ratings and reviews in digital channels such as TripAdvisor as well as demographic data. For the list of the best 100 global cities, the company examined 23 factors. Both studies divided these factors into six categories:

Chris Fair, president of Resonance, wrote in the U.S. report.

Of the individual categories in the U.S. report, Houston ranked high for its product — or key institutions, attractions and infrastructure — and its programing, the entertainment and culture category. An area for improvement is its place features, or "the perceived quality of a city’s natural and built environments."

However, when it comes to its economic climate, Houston almost made the top 10 cut out of all global cities, coming in at No. 11 worldwide. However, Houston ranked lower on the U.S. list for prosperity at No. 12.

The reason why Houston ranked differently in these reports is because Resonance used different factors to determine a city's score in the prosperity category, President Chris Fair said in an email. For the U.S. list, the company used the unemployment rate, the number of Fortune 500 companies and median household income. But for the world list, Resonance used the unemployment rate, the number of Global 500 companies and GDP per capita.

Great city and on the rise. Great diversity, affordability, medically, international commerce, and energy production.

Needs improved drainage and rail system

Outsiders say the city is dirty, but I don't see it being any worse than most US cities.

Houston is a great city when it's not underwater or in the threat of being underwater. Otherwise, I concur with the article.

As a native born and raised Houstonian who loves Houston and hates Dallas.... Dallas has way hotter girls and a better night life. Houston is great for girls because there's richer guys in general who are investment bankers, lawyers, investors, engineers, healthcare, etc. Dallas you have all of OSU, OU, TCU, SMU, Tech, UT, A&M, and Baylor funneling there. Houston for the most part is A&M, Rice, UH, UT, and minority from other schools. Basically if you are single, Dallas is a girl haven for you with a good life. Raising kids and long term I will take Houston any day.

    YEAH! We're Number 31!

Houston is an ugly, muggy, hot steamy swamp. We love it but it really sucks.

Houston is still #1 in the sex slave traffic game. To be fair to Mexico, it's mainly their achievement.

Lived in Europe - Yes, Houston is dirtier than most of the cities I've spent time in.
Currently living in NYC - I would eat off the Houston streets before touching the hand rails in NY. This place is beyond dirty.

Did ANY city from Oklahoma make the list besides Dallas? I guess they should be proud of that.

Anthony Bourdain taught me to always go beyond my backyard and try other people's food and cultures. That's why when I feel like my food has been too delicious or flavorful, I make a trip to Dallas to remember that there is such a thing as bland food. So thank you Dallas for having a non diverse and bland food scene. I tip my hat.

For some reason, the report doesn't resonate with me.
