Typically, I think of freedom and privacy as going hand in hand. You can't have one without the other, and strengthening one also strengthens the other.

    HOWEVER...

For mask mandates, this is not the case. That seems unique. Wearing a face mask no doubt increases privacy, yet is seen (by some) as an assault on freedom.

So I was just wondering if anyone knows of any other instances in history where a State tried to enforce a privacy-increasing measure that people opposed on the grounds of protecting freedom?

I'm not much of a history buff so maybe there are plenty of examples.

i don't have an example, but i find it amusing that in the years BC (before Covid), you couldn't enter a bank w/ a mask and now they're mandatory.

Many zoning and building codes require houses to have things like drapes and shutters also mandatory setbacks increase privacy along with the required screening plantings. Many people resent those as they limit what and how you can build on your property.

Some zoning laws are a good example. Did not think of that.

You have to show your face before you enter or make an appointment ahead of time. At least with my bank and others I’ve heard about

    Contact tracing!

If my deskmate at work is COVID positive, no one will tell me that particular person was positive. Coz privacy. But I have the right to know if the guy sitting 4 feet away is sick or not. I have the right (freedom) to a safe workplace.

There are "criminal exposure" and "criminal transmission" laws for HIV that can apply to COVID.

Students do not have the right to come to my classroom when they are COVID positive, just coz of their right to privacy. My freedom, supposedly, should allow me to be safe from illness carriers at work and in government-sponsored situations.
