Smith makes it official that he will opt out of season. Astros have a lot of arms, but he was likely a 6th/7th inning guy if he played.

Per chron guy, not official that he has opted out, but Astros have placed him on restricted list.

Well, not a huge loss really. He's replaceable.

If you've made any decent money and have a solid footing in the majors I have a hard time seeing why you wouldn't opt out.

Certainly not crippling, but our pen is basically 2 proven guys right now. We have plenty of options, some really talented, but after Osuna and Pressly there's really not another arm that one could call a safe bet to be a good middle reliever.

If we don't have a few guys really step up this bullpen could be ugly.

Osuna isn't ready yet. Didn't get to work out much in Mexico. Pressly or bust.

If you made decent money, money shouldn't be a big motivation. On WS, only applies to guys on teams like Smith's.

Personally, I would opt out, assuming decent money, even though opting in is probably a decent decision for most players.

The problem is if you've made decent money already, you are making a substantial amount now. Many players are already going to struggle with having lost 60% of their pay.

Losing 60% or 100% pay lost shouldn't matter as it all should be discretionary funds after having made decent money.

This likely explains some of the thinking on the part of Joe Smith.
