The Civil Rights Act came at a similar time of national division. MLK wasn't Moses who freed non-whites through peace. He was a martyr where his death (and other leaders) plus the riots that ensued caused more change than he ever would alive. His message was eventually diluted to fit the weaker laws we have now. We don't have a united Congress nor politicians who want to act for the greater good of the nation, but it's obvious laws need to change or this **** keeps happening again and again until the public order "outages" become a normal thing.

What laws do you want? Open forum. Criminalize protests and groupings....Stiffer penalties for LE...Give free guns to everyone...more funding and nationalized "training" for police...

This seems like a national sickness. Letting states "figure it out" sure has worked for the past few decades. Or maybe it has worked as intended but camera phones are nasty snitches.

Police can’t cbe immune like they are, they protect their buddies and shape whatever story it is in their favor rather than what the facts present. It’s always “suspect combative” until some civilian exposes them with a phone

There should be an independent, government funded, branch that is in charge of reviewing any and all police involved deaths or allegations of misconduct.

    And stiffer penalties for rioters.

More stringent controls and swifter prosecution for officers who murder unarmed suspects

and not sure if it is the left or right or both funding the rioters (not the protestors) but the people funding these criminals who only destroy and completely take away from the actual protest message need to be sent to Guantanamo

special prosecutors with no ties to local law enforcement should be used for these police shootings...people do not trust the local DA and the bogus grand jury

all officers should have a body cam, and failure to have it on while on duty should lead to heavy penalties...we do not trust the word of the police...video is a great tool for exposing lies and discovering the truth...people need as much transparency as possible...there is body cam footage for this Floyd incident, we are waiting for it to be released

focus needs to placed on DE-ESCALATING situations

far greater implementation of Civilian Review Boards that can lead to greater police accountability...police policing themselves is not trusted...Chauvin had 18 complaints against him, and is still out on the streets? The police are public servants.

Police misconduct prosecutions must be handled by a district attorney other than their own. Too much conflict of interest right now.

Laws that can stop police being a rage king.
Laws can let people not to have to crawl on the ground when police presents.
Laws can change that you get killed if you are in the way of their cars or knees.

Thank you. So much useful information to take in. Same twitter thread but easier to read: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1180655701271732224.html

This link's in one of the bullet points caught my eye:
    DISCUSSION
These results indicate that while the chances of killing a civilian increases the more arrests a police department makes, that likelihood is shaped by the department’s policies governing how and when police can use force during those encounters. This suggests that advocacy efforts pushing police department to adopt more restrictive use of force policies - and the accountability structures to enforce them - can substantially reduce the number of people killed by police in America. And while this analysis was limited to examining rates of deadly force, these policies may also be associated with reductions in other forms of police violence as well.

Despite their potential impact, efforts to push for these changes have often been opposed by police organizations that claim more restrictive use of force policies “endanger officers” or "put communities at risk" by preventing officers from effectively addressing crime (See here, here, here, and here). We find that these assumptions are not supported by the data. Officers in police departments with more restrictive policies in place are actually less likely to be killed in the line of duty, less likely to be assaulted, and have similar likelihood of sustaining an injury during an assault.

Moreover, our findings show police departments with more restrictive use of force policies have similar crime rates, including similar violent crime rates, as police departments with less restrictive use of force policies.

In short, a commitment to protect and preserve life necessitates the immediate adoption of more restrictive policies governing when and how officers use force in our communities.

All you have to do stop selective enforcement of the current laws
    and
You have to hold the police to at least the same level as the rest of the citizentry
They should be held to a higher level but they are not up to that task . .

For the most part, we already have laws in place. We need to enforce them.

I would like to see significant fines/jail for paying people to protest.

Stiffer penalty for both police and rioters. There is no excuse for that public enemy #1 to have so many marks and still be a police officer. And if you participate in a riot, prison time and a felony (no job promotions). Reform for both, but in the end police brutality ain't going to stop because you can't control the mind of every police officer. Some are good at hiding their bad sides. And rioting ain't going to stop because Rodney King didn't teach us nothing.

Real quick. Incentivize black men to join the police force by offering them more money similar to how bilingual teachers are paid more. Heck, pay black men more to teach especially if they teach in inner city schools. Offer full ride scholarships to capable blacks to attend law school.

Most of all, patience is necessary. I know that Rodney King was close to 30 years ago, but the solution to that was more black men in positions of authority and law and order. Similar to how George Floyd would likely be alive if he were white, he'd also be likely alive if Chauvin was black.

I agree that police aren't following laws on the books and prosecutors aren't punishing them for that. But I think we have to hold police to a much higher standard than the rest of the citizenry.

I was watching Van Jones on CNN the other night and he made the point that we don't allow clowns, as an example, to pull you over, detain, handcuff, and possibly arrest you. That would be assault and kidnapping. We grant police special rights though, because we have a mutually agreed upon contract that they will not (ever) abuse their powers, including the power to use lethal force. And that when that doesn't work anymore, it's time to take the system apart so it can put reconstructed in a way that's just. (I'm paraphrasing)

Hope I'll see some of y'all at the march from Discovery Green to City Hall, this Tuesday at 3 p.m. George Floyd's family will be marching with us.

I've been observing my own stay-at-home order until it's safe out there, but I'll be marching on Tuesday, coronavirus be damned.

How would you address looting without the use of force?

I'd like to see you personally deal with this before you write your delusional article on how to reform cops because of 1 bad apple in a 100. No country ever will have a 100% perfect rate when so many die from innocent situations while letting their guard down.

The focus should be on committing less crime - not imaginary legislation that can't change human nature.
