Good. That guy was an idiot...to go to the crew and blast the commander for leaking a letter? That was uncalled for. I understand removing him from his position...he shouldn't have gone to the press even if it finally did get something done...but the Acting Secretary lost it. You quietly remove him and that's it.

Surprised Grassley signed the letter...Collins and Romney, not so much.

Edit: Didn't realize that Grassley was the one spearheading this...good for him.

Bipartisan group of senators demands Trump explain intel IG firing
The letter, signed by eight senators, represents Congress’ clearest denunciation yet of the decision to sack the intelligence community inspector general.

A bipartisan group of senators is demanding that President Donald Trump explain why he fired the intelligence community’s top watchdog, writing in a letter late Wednesday that the president’s stated reasoning was “not sufficient.”

The letter, signed by eight senators from both parties, represents Congress’ clearest denunciation yet of Trump’s decision to sack Michael Atkinson, the intelligence community inspector general.

“Congressional intent is clear that an expression of lost confidence, without further explanation, is not sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the statute,” the lawmakers, led by Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), wrote in the letter to Trump.

defended the firing of Atkinson, calling him a “total disgrace” over his handling of the whistleblower complaint, which detailed Trump’s conversations with Ukraine’s president. Atkinson was required by law to transmit the complaint to the House and Senate intelligence committees.

In his letter informing lawmakers of Atkinson’s termination, Trump said only that he had lost confidence in Atkinson. That wasn’t enough for the senators.

“As supporters of the Inspector General community, and as advocates for government transparency and accountability, it is our responsibility to confirm that there are clear, substantial reasons for removal,” the senators wrote, asking for an explanation no later than April 13 and citing a 2008 Senate report about ensuring that watchdogs “are not removed for political reasons.”

The lawmakers also accused Trump of going around Congress when he placed Atkinson on administrative leave when he fired him, effectively sidestepping the mandatory 30-day notice to the congressional intelligence panels.

“By placing the IG on 30 days of administrative leave and naming an acting replacement, the administration has already effectively removed that IG and appears to have circumvented Congress’s role in this process,” the senators wrote.

They added that the purpose of the 30-day requirement was “to provide an opportunity for an appropriate dialogue with Congress in the event that the planned transfer or removal is viewed as an inappropriate or politically motivated attempt to terminate an effective inspector general.”

Democrats have condemned the firing as a dangerous abuse of power and act of political retribution, while some Republicans have criticized the move as unwarranted.

Trump has adopted an aggressive posture toward inspectors general, most recently criticizing the Health and Human Services Department’s watchdog over a report that revealed medical supply shortages and coronavirus testing issues across the country. The president also removed the acting Pentagon inspector general, Glenn Fine, from his post shortly after he was named to lead a watchdog panel overseeing implementation of the $2.2 trillion coronavirus relief package that Congress approved last month.

In their Wednesday letter, the senators said inspectors general should “only be removed when there is clear evidence of wrongdoing or failure to perform the duties of the office, and not for reasons unrelated to their performance, to help preserve IG independence.”

In addition to Grassley, two Republicans signed the Wednesday letter: Susan Collins of Maine and Mitt Romney of Utah, who both criticized Trump’s posture toward Ukraine. Romney was the only Republican to vote to convict the president in his impeachment trial.

The Democratic signers were Gary Peters of Michigan, Mark Warner of Virginia, Ron Wyden of Oregon, Dianne Feinstein of California and Jon Tester of Montana.

This was "buried" in the post above, but I think it deserves a bit more attention here. We're witnessing trump blatantly attempting to prevent oversight of the $2.2 Trillion dollar Coronavirus relief package. This another attempt to circumvent the will of Congress and prevent it from exercising it's constitutional mandate to provide oversight of the actions of the executive branch. In my humble opinion. Trump Removes Acting Pentagon IG Slated to Lead Pandemic Oversight

Glenn Fine was ousted from the Defense Department’s acting IG position on Monday.

    BY COURTNEY BUBLÉ
    APRIL 7, 2020

President Trump has removed the acting Pentagon inspector general from his position, thus stripping him of his ability to lead the committee overseeing the government’s pandemic response.

On Monday, the White House ousted Glenn Fine from the Defense Department’s acting IG position, instead designating the Environmental Protection Agency inspector general to serve in that role, Politico reported on Tuesday. Last week, the Council of the Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency tapped Fine to chair the Pandemic Response Accountability Committee, an oversight body created by the $2.2 trillion CARES Act to ensure taxpayer money is spent wisely. The law empowered CIGIE to name the committee chair, but stipulates that only current IGs can hold the position, so Trump’s removal of Fine from his acting position prevents the well-regarded watchdog from leading the oversight committee.

Fine will remain principal deputy inspector general at the Pentagon, the position he held prior to becoming acting IG, according to The Washington Post.

Over the course of his presidency, Trump has flouted transparency precedents and bristled at the role of IGs, whose work is critically important to holding agencies and the administration accountable for protecting the public’s health, among other things. Fine’s removal is part of a larger shakeup to the IG community.

Trump signaled in a signing statement on March 27 that he would not enforce some of the oversight provisions in the $2.2 trillion CARES Act. He specifically objected to the creation of a special IG for pandemic recovery at Treasury empowered to request information from other agencies and report to Congress any delays in receiving that information: “I do not understand, and my administration will not treat, this provision as permitting the SIGPR to issue reports to the Congress without the presidential supervision required by the Take Care Clause, Article II, section 3,” the statement said.

Friday evening, Trump announced his intention to tap Brian Miller, currently Special Assistant to the President and Senior Associate Counsel in the Office of White House Counsel, for the job of Special Inspector General for Pandemic Recovery at the Treasury Department.

Then Friday night, Trump notified Congress that he was removing Intelligence Community Inspector General Michael Atkinson from his position within 30 days (he placed Atkinson on leave immediately). Atkinson has come under fire by Trump for his handling of the whistleblower complaint last fall that sparked the impeachment investigation. Michael Horowitz, CIGIE chairman and Justice Department IG, blasted the move in a statement early Saturday.

Trump railed against another IG on Monday evening during a White House briefing after reporters asked about a Health and Human Services inspector general report that concluded hospitals are facing shortages of testing supplies and personal protective equipment during the pandemic. He questioned the credibility of acting HHS Inspector General Christi Grimm, who has been in her current role since January but has worked for the office since 1999.

CIGIE did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
