I have had some very scary moments because of this type of &*%$. I try to slow down to allow the idiots the room they so clearly need; but it's also self-preservation.

Again, you see enough of this kind of miscreant behavior, and one can't help but become a misanthrope.

I should add: there's three locations I know of, where this happens:

    a) on 610 south, going to the west (as you come close to 288)
    b) on the new exit from 610S to 288S
    c) on the frontage road of Beltway 8, as you enter after having exited 288S

Heck, these merge locations are all over the place right now in Htown.

Besides selfish drivers, I also place the blame on the highway planners. They could do more in many instances to let drivers know that they are in a lane that will soon disappear.

Yes, part of the blame is on the people who draw the lanes.
There's no indication of what lane is going and what lane is ending. So now you have idiots driving down the middle to make sure no one else merges.

45 south near allen parkway has two merge lanes now. TWO. Most people start merging WAYY too early and there's an entire 10 car length of lane left. So frustrating to watch. And those morons who change lanes for no reason INTO the merge lanes can eat it. Geez.

I have not been in the Houston area since February. I curious if the road construction projects are still going on or has corona virus halted them? If there is less traffic on the roads now seems like a ideal time to make major progress on road construction.

According to this Houston Chronicle article they are still working on road projects and may actually speed them up: https://www.houstonchronicle.com/ne...e-road-work-houston-coronavirus-15145802.php#
I believe construction of this type is considered "essential" and can remain in operation.

They're still working on 288. Haven't really been outside of that area so can't speak on other projects.

Just wanted to say, by the third iteration or so, this kind of had the same effect as a turn signal. Cool.

Ya they are def working on 288. I don't know if it's the same amount of workers though but now would be a great time to speed this sh** up.
But of course they will wait till crisis is over and heavy traffic is on the road before ramping it up.

So…I am hoping this is temporary but the 59 South on-ramp to 610N (downtown to Galleria area) was always a nightmare due to everyone just driving to the end of the lane and merging in at the last minute. But now they appear to have added a new wrinkle. They have merged this lane with traffic on 610 N who are exiting Westheimer, thereby forcing each 59-610 entrant to have to move over one one lane to the left once they make the curve, making this 2x worse than before. Hoping this merging is temporary and not something an engineer developed.
