Any popular gun reform proposals you can think of which would have prevented this?

The goal isn't 100% prevention that's not possible with anything. Many of the popular proposals would have helped prevent other mass shooting that have occurred in the past few years. Are you questioning that?

This is the topic du jour. I don't see any popular gun reform proposals stopping this shooting.

The fundamental problem is there are 400 million guns floating around the United States and unless anyone wants to get to the crux of the matter and address that I think minor gun reform proposals are pretty much a waste of time. I don't think any politician has the balls too though.

Could be a template for the US in the future.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/01/world/canada-assault-style-weapons-ban-trnd/index.html

Canada bans assault-style weapons after its worst ever mass murder

Assault-style weapons are banned in Canada effective immediately, the country's prime minister said Friday.

The move comes less than two weeks after Canada's deadliest rampage in modern history, when a gunman in Nova Scotia killed 22 people after a 12-hour reign of terror.

"You don't need an AR-15 to bring down a deer," Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said at a news conference in Ottawa. "So, effective immediately, it is no longer permitted to buy, sell, transport, import or use military-grade assault weapons in this country."

Police said the gunman had several semi-automatic handguns and at least two semi-automatic rifles, one of which was described by witnesses as a military-style assault weapon.

"These weapons were designed for one purpose, and one purpose only, to kill the largest number of people in the shortest amount of time. There is no use and no place for such weapons in Canada," Trudeau said.

The ban is effective immediately but disposal of the weapons will be subject to a two-year amnesty period. Trudeau said some form of compensation would also be put in place but the firearms can also be exported and sold after a proper export license is obtained.

Trudeau said that "thoughts and prayers" for mass shooting victims were no longer enough and that's why his government acted.

The Nova Scotia shooter used a replica police car and an RCMP uniform to impersonate a police officer as he killed both people he knew and strangers, police said. He was fatally shot by officers.

Of the 22 people killed, 13 were shot and nine died in house fires, Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Tuesday.

RCMP said the gunman, Gabriel Wortman, 51, also killed or wounded animals and pets that he found at the homes.

Police believe Wortman acted alone in the shootings and arsons.

The gunman did not have a firearms license and that only one weapon was traced back to Canada, police said.

Last week, RCMP announced its officers had expanded their investigation into the US but would not elaborate on the nature of their leads. Police say they believe the gunman acquired at least some of his weapons in the US.

Legislation had been in the works for months after Trudeau promised during his reelection campaign in late 2019 to beef up gun control, especially for cities hard hit by gang violence.

Trudeau failed to make good on a 2015 election promise to restrict sales of assault weapons in Canada.

It wouldn't surprise me if seeing all those guys brandishing inside the MI State House didn't influence him also.

So crazy to bring weapons to a rally. All it takes is one nut case to open fire and anyone with a gun all of a sudden becomes a target

If the Covid doesn't get ya, the bullets will...at least in Ft Worth

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/11/us/fort-worth-texas-park-shooting/index.html

5 people were injured during Texas shooting at a park with 600 people

An estimated 600 people were at a Texas park Sunday when fireworks went off and gunshots rang out.

Fort Worth Police responded to Village Creek Park just before 7 p.m. and found five people injured, Public Information Officer Buddy Calzada said during a press briefing Sunday night.

There were about 600 people in the park when fireworks exploded. Witnesses told police that they heard 30 rounds of gunfire immediately after the fireworks, according to Calzada.

Responding officers found five people with injuries and transported them all to local hospitals. Three suffered non-life threatening injuries and two others are in critical condition, Calzada said.

"The best thing we can do for them is obviously pray and ... get them some medical care right now," Calzada said of the victims.
There was no additional information regarding the victims or possible suspects given during the press briefing.

The police department's gang unit is taking the lead, and state and federal partners are assisting with the investigation, according to Calzada.

The Stay at Home order in Texas expired May 1 and plans for the easing of additional restrictions have been laid out for the state. While parks in the city are open, people are still encouraged to social distance.

As for the large crowd, Calzada explained that while the department works to tell people to follow social distancing rules, they try not to enforce with citations.

"We've been stating that everyone would follow the rules that have been set out," Calzada said. "We've tried to work with everybody to not try to cite them or ticket them but ultimately people have a choice and that's just the choice they made tonight."

As we open up we see the return of mass shootings too.. There was one in AZ yesterday that barely got much coverage.

    https://www.cnn.com/2020/05/20/us/westgate-arizona-shooting/index.html
Suspect in Arizona shooting 'wanted to gain some respect' because he'd been bullied, police say

(CNN)The 20-year-old suspect in a shooting at a Glendale, Arizona, entertainment district told investigators he set out to hurt 10 people because he had been bullied in the past, police said Thursday.

Authorities identified the suspect as Armando Hernandez Jr. of nearby Peoria.

Three people were injured in the Wednesday shooting, one of whom -- a 19-year-old man -- remains in critical condition after suffering life threatening injuries, Glendale police spokesman Sgt. Randy Stewart told reporters.
A woman, 30, was injured but not transported to the hospital, while a 16-year-old girl was taken to a medical center with non-life-threatening injuries, he said. m

Hernandez is charged with three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, three counts of aggravated assault with serious physical injury, five counts of discharging a firearm in city limits, one count of criminal damage-defacing property, one count of criminal damage-recklessly damaging the property of a utility, and a count of disorderly conduct, according to the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office.
More charges are possible, Stewart said.
Hernandez was being held on $1 million cash bond after his first court appearance, a spokesman for the sheriff's office confirmed to CNN.
Detectives have searched Hernandez's home and vehicle, Stewart said. A black assault rifle was recovered at the scene, he said.

The investigation indicates Hernandez arrived at Westgate, surveyed the scene, returned to his car, fully loaded three rifle magazines, and retrieved his gun, the sergeant said.
"The suspect did, in this case, admit to detectives that he was planning on going to Westgate to harm 10 victims with this horrendous act," Stawart said. "He wanted to gain some respect, and he felt that he had been bullied in his life."
Calls reporting a shooter at the Westgate Entertainment District came in to the 911 center about 7:25 p.m. Wednesday.
The second officer on the scene, a lieutenant, located Hernandez and took him into custody without incident, Stewart said.
"He did mention to the investigators that he gave up when he saw the officers responding," Stewart said.
Though Hernandez acknowledged to police he was the gunman, Stewart said, it is not clear why he picked the number 10. It's also unclear why he allegedly chose to seek victims at Westgate.
The charge related to damaging a utility's property stems from Hernandez shooting a transformer, which caused power to go out, Stewart said. As the transformer was located near one of the victims, it may have been a stray round, the police spokesman said.

Westgate Entertainment District "will continue to work closely with the Glendale Police Department and i-house security to best ensure the safety of our customers, tenants and residents," the company said in a statement.
Shortly after the shooting, the Glendale Police Department asked people still in the complex to shelter in place while they ensured there were no other shooters or victims.
Chipotle employee Isaac Osuna, who was among those caught in the lockdown, heard at least five shots before seeing people flee the scene, he said.
Arizona state Sen. Martin Quezada witnessed the shooting, he said on Twitter.
"I'm ok. Lots of shaken up people," Quezada wrote.
Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey also tweeted about the incident, saying the state's Department of Public Safety has been in touch with local police.
Special agents with the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are assisting the Glendale police, the agencies told CNN.
CNN's Jamiel Lynch, Chris Boyette and Jennifer Henderson contributed to this report.

(CNN)At least two people were killed and eight others injured in an early Sunday shooting at a Greenville, South Carolina, nightclub, police said.

A deputy with the Greenville County Sheriff's Office noticed a disturbance at the club, Lavish Lounge, shortly before 2 a.m. When he pulled into the parking lot, he heard gunshots and called for emergency assistance, Lt. Jimmy Bolt said.

The Greenville Police Department and South Carolina Highway Patrol responded and found four gunshot victims inside, Bolt said. The officers did not fire their weapons, he said.

Leave it to a member of the OK2BR (OK to be racist) Meetup Group to have bumped this thread.

(Parenthetically, no, I don't think such a group exists. If you start such a group, I don't want credit.)

The effects of gun violence have hit too close to home for Rickey Smiley. The 51-year-old comedian and radio show host of the Atlanta-based The Rickey Smiley Morning Show revealed some shocking news during Monday's show.

"I wasn't even going to say nothing about this. I've been dealing with this all morning, sitting up here with butterflies in my stomach trying to do a show. My youngest daughter was shot last night, Aaryn," the father of four said. "She's in the hospital right now."

He went on to reveal that Aaryn, 19, "was shot about twice," on Sunday night while visiting a Whataburger in Houston, Texas.

The Houston Police Department tells ET that police are investigating a shooting that took place at 8:45 p.m. on July 5. In addition to Aaryn, three other men were injured in the gunfire.
