This song is awesome and way better than the positive k song with the girl yelling I got a man over and over
I didn't build this city, and certainly "we" didn't. Nobody that's still alive built this city. It was built by the Allen Brothers in 1836 (they bought the property from a lady for $5,000).... wait... are we talking about Houston? Which city did we build, exactly? ...and Rock and Roll didn't exist when this city was built. It came around in the late 1940's and 50's (over 100 years after this city was built).
"We built this city on sex, drugs and rock & roll!" - Fixed Have you tried dancing to the song? The only dance that works is the "white guy" dance where you sway your hands back and forth punctuated with a snap of the fingers.
I was looking for autographs to buy on ebay and came across one for a Guglielmo Marconi. 2k. And then I saw the We built this city thread, and remembered, glowingly, a line from the song that always resonated with me. no idea what it meant, but I liked it cause it was catchy. "Marconi plays the mamba." Well, that's the guy lol. Now I know.
I agree with Buck. I think your problem with it is partly based on not being around when it came out. One could say "it went on and on" about a lot of songs, back then and much later. The Stones Goin' Home. The Beatles I Want You (she's so heavy) The Doors Riders on the Storm. That's just 3 examples, all from very famous groups. I'll also point out that all of those songs are longer than the one we're talking about. Much longer. The Animals were very famous in 1967, when I saw them at the Coliseum in October of that year. Yes, they played House of the Rising Sun and got huge applause with the opening notes. They were a blues band, and while far different than the Kinks, many of their songs were also about the working class in the UK back then. Example? We Gotta Get Out Of This Place. Used below in a Vietnam War film (which you might recognize), but not at all about the war. Also fits everyone's current situation, stuck at home. ;-)
I don't know, man. It's the kind of song that encourages social distancing, as seen here. Ahead of their time!
When I say it just goes "on and on and on" I'm not talking about the length of the song. I'm talking about the same chord progression over and over again with no variation. Just the same 16 bar progression over and over again. No change for the chorus (does it even have a chorus?), no change for the bridge (no bridge), no dramatic key change...just the same chords. That, to me, is boring. Another example of this would be Paint It Black by the Stones. Although it actually has a verse and a chorus, it just gets boring to me hearing that same riff over and over again. Now maybe I'm a little biased because of a negative experience or 2 playing these songs in a band a long time ago........ I started a thread a long time ago called something like "classic songs that you don't really like" or something like that. The 2 songs referenced above would definitely qualify for me. Key phrase being "for me."
