David Roback of Mazzy Star passed away this week. He was also the creative force behind some pretty great 80's bands, Rain Parade and Opal.

    RIP

Kind of a bizarre mix I'm listening to now.

Jurassic 5. Not too many hip hop artists rap about Robin of Locksley and Herman Munster.

Also Can't forget Camper Van Beethoven

Not many are able to flow with harmony. I like it.

For me, these guys are the best there's ever been.

J5 is so underrated. One of the few bright spots in rap at the turn of the millennium, and maybe the last quality Alternative Rap groups that existed after Gangsta Rap took over.

Yes, the references alone are so far and above the run of the mill stuff that's out there. Truly amazing.

Agreed. I often go back and ask myself how they were not bigger. I think time has elevated their appreciation but they are still incredibly underrated.

I think it's that they make it seem so easy. If it really is as easy for them then that speaks to the huge amount of talent they have. If it isn't as easy as they make it seems then it speaks to the craftsmanship and sheer brilliance. If it's a combination of both (which I would suspect) then it speaks to talent, brilliance, and craftsmanship. Either way, they are tragically underrated.

Just consuming another lost-in-the-shuffle 90's rock album for the first time. Rocket from the Crypt's Circa: Now from 1993.

Verdict: yep, better than pretty much any alternative/indie rock released today.

Across the Stars. Brilliant violin by Ann-Sophie Mutter in collaboration with John Williams, playing selected pieces from scores written by Williams that many of you will be very familiar with. Yeah, I have eclectic tastes. It's in Ultra HD on Amazon Music's streaming service.

Actually, until I saw this, I had completely forgotten about them. Thanks! Time to revisit.

I think I read somewhere he was in an early incarnation of the Bangles when they were part of the Paisley Underground scene which was before any record deals.

Always loved this Dylan cover he did with a couple of them.
