If this Texas student doesn't cut his dreadlocks, he won't get to walk at graduation.

What year is it again? I can’t believe there are schools like this out there. You can’t have dreadlocks at a certain length?. At best it is culturally insensitive at worst it is down right discriminatory and racist

Doesn't mean I necessarily agree with them, but schools having hair standards for boys is nothing remotely new, and I fail to see how it is racist.

To some extent, I can get hair codes in high impact sports but this is turrible.

Just because it's nothing new does not mean the rule should still stand.

How does this rule make them better students or a better school?

    Can anybody explain this rational?

Poole went on to defend the policy, calling it an "expectation of the community." High expectations lead to success, he said. The dress code -- including the hair length rule -- is a part of that.

How the hair does hair length contribute to success?

And what the hell does expectation of the community mean?

This is not the 50's or 60's.

...maybe just as important a question is: why is the school NOW "enforcing" this existing rule?

Dreadlocks (particularly at the length this young man has) don't grow overnight. From most reports, the school has made no attempts to have the young man remove or cut his hair before.

The young man has even, in sight of the rule about the length of his hair not touching the collar of his shirt, worn his hair up with nary a complaint.

To your question, Buck...selective enforcement of rules (and harsher-than-average punishment for "some") are why this has the whiff of "racism" about it...

Why should any school have a hair policy unless it's for safety.

    Especially a public school.

    Buncha bullshit peepee games.

Hair wasn't an issue first semester or last year or the year before or the year before? (Could be wrong but I assume he's been at this HS since the beginning/9th grade).
Then you change that **** over Christmas break and pretend it was the rule all along? FOH.

Is the rule for all boy's hair length, or just specifically for dreads? It's being portrayed as the later which is why people are thinking it's racist.

What the outrage community is missing out on is that this is actually a sexist policy! Why the hell can't boys have long hair?
