Its going to be real hard rooting against Cole. But he has changed sides and the Yankees get no sympathy from me, ever! After that Oklahoma team, I hate these guys the most.

I wish you the very best personal life possible and 9 years of professional frustration :D

Ownership was happy with World Series Championship, and gave Dombrowski a lot of latitude in deals after the World Series. Dobrowski was fired for the long term deals he made after the World Series (~70M per year for 3 years, with some extending in years 4-6) that had no effect on the 2018 World Series Championship.

Not to mention anyone competent in money management will find a way to earn 5-10% annually at a very low risk.

No way I would give a pitcher 9yrs and he has that opt out in 5 so you could be under pressure to give him a raise for what already is the biggest contract in MLB history by quite a bit.

The odds of him living up to that contract are not good he would basically have to pitch at his 2019 level for the entire deal to justify it.

That is a very, very high number for "low risk".

When you have that much money it’s not that tough, it opens the doors to so many other avenues. That being said if you don’t know what you’re doing, you become an easy target to be scammed - Jave Peavy, Roy O. and Mark Sanchez awhile back were taken for a combined ~$30M cash (see link below if interested in story).

Anyhow, have you not been earning 5-10% on average the past five years on your 401K? IMO even that long term it’s pretty safe and over 20-30 years you’ll likely average a ~5% return.

    https://m.sfgate.com/giants/article...NfYTdsSVNPaG11MFkwcE0xT2QydW8tdXk0dG51b0ZhRmE.

Edit: I didn’t fact check these numbers but regardless they pass the eye test.

    20
    -year returns - November 2019
    S&P 500: 5.90%
    Dow Jones: 7.03%
    Russell 2000: 7.70%

Not looking to create an argument here but I am curious as to why you think 5-10% is high? I’m assuming the above doesn’t pass the “safe” test for you?

I value discussion and do not see this as an argument.
10% you get into volatile mutual funds and risk heavy strategies that could work out if you earn tens of millions a year and have millions liquid, but they are not guaranteed. From my experience have seen otherwise secure individuals get burnt with gimmicks telling them 12% is possible.
I am pretty happy with a 4% return on non 401k investments (I don't include assistance as investments).
Is it really as easy as posting Dow Jones 7.03% when you look at 20 year value? Is weathering the ups and downs of every company other than apple for a 20 year period realistic.. if you invested in the energy or chemical industry 5 years ago you would be losing money with Exxon Mobil, ConocoPhillips, DuPont etc. Tech companies like Uber aren't guaranteed.
If you're an expert fair play to you, but I myself do not see returns close to 10% as low risk.

Seeing Cole in another uniform, even the trash Yankees, doesn't bother me. He was a 2-year rental. It's not like seeing Bregman, Altuve or Springer playing for another team. But thinking of Cole takes me back to that jog to the bullpen and the 7th inning and what could have been... I think I'll always be reminded of it every time I see his name.

    https://www.houstonchronicle.com/sp...Cole-reflects-on-his-Astros-days-14916477.php

A reflective Cole said not being used in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series — he had gone to the bullpen to warmup for a potential relief appearance — wasn’t what left a bad taste in his mouth. Rather, it was coming up short in the Fall Classic to the Nationals.

“We all have our own way of handling our emotions, and afterwards it was a bit raw and maybe a bit uncharacteristic of how I tried to handle my business,” Cole said.

“But I was angry. It wasn’t because I didn’t pitch. It was because we lost. And I was sitting down in the bullpen in the same damn seat (as Game 5 against the Red Sox in the 2018 ALCS elimination). We were eight outs away, and maybe I should have switched seats. We had a plan (for me to pitch), it just never came to fruition, unfortunately.

“And dammit, we were just so close.”

What a great contract for Cole, all the way around. Good for him.

"I'm not an employee of this team"

Says it all. Technically he was still under contract for another 48 hours or so (as were all other impending free agents), and he was part of the team that had just lost the game. Looked totally classless and unsportsmanlike, bolting instantly and basically disowning the team he helped carry for the past two years. Thank God Verlander won the Cy Young. Much more deserving, and a true class act. Now let's get him a WS Game win (or two) next year!
