In retirement my dad has started cooking more seriously. I got him a 12" enamled cast iron skillet for Christmas. He will be like "wtf a skillet??" when he opens it but once I explain it he'll appreciate it...... and if not, then I'll have a nice new skillet! Win/win.
They're very nice, but ridiculously overpriced (I say this as an owner/user). There's several other brands that are basically indistinguishable in cooking situations for a fraction of the money (like 75-80% cheaper). Cuisinart, believe it or not, is generally the highest rated competitor. Le Creuset's are of course better quality and will last forever if you plan on giving it to your grandkids, but there's nothing wrong with the others.
