It is not clear to me how the Republicans feel about this relatively simple legal question. I posited the question in the Ukraine and impeachment threads, but no response for some reason. I think it got lost in the shuffle, so I thought a poll might spur discussion and response.

(I hope I don't screw up this whole polling thing.)

He could have requested an investigation through the proper channels and I wouldn't have had a problem with it. Trump went about the whole situation in a completely insane manner, one that only a reality star could pull off. Great for ratings, horrible for our country...

    It’s called extortion and bribery.

    Yes, it’s a crime.

Yes. It is illegal to ask a foreign government for assistance in an election. Which trump has already done with at least three countries. Aid to Ukraine was authorized by Congress it is in violation of a congressional act to have withheld aid.

Is it complete dumbassery to start another thread on a subject thoroughly covered in other threads? Yes! Poll closed...

he definitely violated the law. the quid pro quo is undeniable at this point and that is a violation of bribery laws (and his oath of office). but i see his supporters trying to claim that its only a crime if you have "corrupt intent".

but we have now established the nixonian notion that if the president does it then it is not against the law. so was it technically illegal???

I quibble with the question. He didn't just ask them, he leveraged them by withholding funding, made it clear through his people why, and then asked them.

Don’t care to discuss the issue, so attack the question? I don’t see you addressing this rather straightforward question anywhere in the “other threads”.

It must be difficult for you, not wanting to say it was illegal but knowing full well it was.

I can’t believe there isn’t one Trump defender willing to vote in his favor.

    Bigtexx?
    Corrosion?
    BruceAndre?
    MickFry?
    MojoMan?

    Anyone?

Totally not illegal to ask someone to investigate crime in their own country.

I have a huge problem with that.

Trump put Trump ahead of country by making that request. This violates his oath of office and on face value is definitionally impeachable.

Is Hillary the name of your neighbor's wife or one of their dogs?
