Schaub was very good for Kubiak's system. Haynesworth ruined him when he smashed his foot. The best chance they had in the playoffs was the year the D just couldn't stop Brady.
"Mediocre?" Matt Schaub was a two-time Pro Bowler, one season leading the NFL with 4,700 yards or so. He is one of the few in NFL history to have at least one 500 yd passing game and was close to another with 497 in 2009 vs the Redskins. If you recall the 2011 season, Schaub had that offense running like a juggernaut until Dirty Haynesworth forever ruined his metatarsals in Tampa Bay. The Texans afterward still streaked to 10-3 largely led by that awesome JJ Watt defense. But with fumes and third-stringer TJ Yates, eventually ended up 10-6. Imagine if Schaub stayed healthy that year. They could have finished 12-4 or 13-3, making noise in the post-season. In an alternate universe, imagine a non-injured Schaub being a force, not hampered by the progressive weakening of his foot affecting his ability to throw long and accurately as before. They would have been more competitive against the Patriots late in the 2012 season. They would have finished off the lame Christian Ponder-Vikings at home to get to 13-3 and home field advantage. Just maybe the playoff game against New England had a different result. In an alternate universe, the Texans would more than likely have had Schaub for a couple more seasons at least. More seasons with Kubiak as the Texans would probably have remained competitive well into 2013 (the year the wheels fell off in our universe with lame-duck lisfranc Schaub). No Billy O'brien. No Deshaun Watson. The cards of fate would have been dealt differently. But perhaps that is where the silver-lining of that tragedy was for the Texans in our universe. That act of Haynesworth and downfall of Schaub are what led to Houston eventually getting Deshaun the Great. And it looks like we have our good luck savior Deshaun who may finally break the burial ground curse of the Astrodome-area with some Super Bowl wins for us some day. All that being said, I am appreciative for what Warren Moon and Matt Schaub did for our Houston NFL teams. Moon was great and while Schaub wasn't "great," he was still a damn good qb.
He was nothing special imo. It was more of kubes being a great play caller. Agree to disagree. But we have a franchise qb now so that’s all that matters.
Schaub was a solid QB, who did his job competently. when i think of mediocre qb, dalton and bortles comes to mind.
Schaub is the original Kirk Cousins. Can put up numbers, but when it counts he's not getting it done. He doesn't have the intangibles. The Texans with Schaub and Kubes were never going to beat the Patriots. They were never even competitive and a healthy Schaub in 2011 wouldn't have made a difference.
Now that he is checking it down to the RB, and TE more often he is looking a LOT LOT better, and taking far fewer hits. DD
I don't believe Cousins ever had a career-altering injury on the level of Schaub's. As I've said, the Texans with that unbelievable defense in 2011 along with Schaub orchestrating a near-unstoppable offense UNTIL HIS CAREER-ALTERING INJURY in Tampa Bay...they had a puncher's chance against the Patriots or anyone else. Going into 2012, if Schaub never got injured, he wouldn't have had his eventual regression at the end of the year when he was really wearing on his Lisfranc injury. By the time of the Dec 10, 2012 regular season game against the Patriots, Schaub was physically cooked. He couldn't really throw more than 15 yards anymore. A qb who never had physical or athletic gifts lost confidence to make consistent throws when dealing with the pain. A sports medicine doctor who posts on Texans Talk accurately predicted before the 2012-13 season kicked off that Matt would start well but after mid-season, he would start to suffer the sequela of his injury. And indeed he did. Did you see the bombs Schaub threw in the Tampa Bay game in 2011 before Dirty Haynesworth destroyed Matt's metatarsals? Did you see the bombs he threw in Denver very early in 2012, notching a win against Peyton Manning? But as we address the armchair quarterbacks who like to toss around the "mediocre" tag, let's recall Andre Johnson's sentiments ""If Schaub doesn't get hurt, we win," Johnson said. Heard this stat yesterday.. Since the Panthers' game, Watson has 125 rating against the blitzkrieg. Ravens blitz 49% of their snaps.
