I remember! It was a day game and I was at school so we were listening to it on the radio in class. Mlicki gave up one unearned run and we lost 1-0. Geez those pre-2004 NLDS series were freaking rough.
If we head back to Houston down 3-2 and have to use Verlander and Cole, one of them will only get to start once in the WS on regular rest. Meaning they will only pitch twice in the first 6 games. If Verlander loses his start, regardless of where it is, we're in trouble. If we're tied 2-2 and he loses our season comes to a bullpen day. If we're down 3-2 and he loses, our seasons over.
Why is this a bad thing? Don't you want Verlander pitching in the biggest game of the season? You're basically suggesting we lose game 5 so Verlander can pitch in the biggest game of the season in game 6. Why not just do that in game 5 without having conceded a game?
greinke wins.... pitch Verlander for the kill Greinke loses... fly Verlander home for game 6 Pitch the bullpen game on game 5 Open with peacock, Urquidy, James, Harris, Cole(It’s Coles bull pen session day...he can go an inning), Osuna. If it doesn’t work... we have a fully rested Verlander at home game 6, with a fully rested Cole game 7.
As snake bit as Greinke has been in his post season career, I say send him out with all the confidence in the world. He has Verlander and Cole to back him up, so he is protected, hence he should pitch as relaxed to be his Ace self. And if it goes to Urquidy in a game 7, we’ll be it... That means the Yankees got to our Aces, and they earned a chance for a decisive game 7 against out back end of the rotation. But I liked how Urquidy pitched in September. Also that would put the Astros offense on full alert, you got to strike first, hard, and continuously...
Greinke is like a robot. I don’t think he cares one way or another who is in front of him or the scenario. He either has it or he doesn’t. Just don’t make him do an interview.
Swing on the first pitch. The announcers were saying at one point that the first 10 out of 11 pitches that Tanka threw were strikes.
I'll take 5 IP 0 ER... and bullpen giving up nothing... ...but offense got completely shutout despite prime Biggio, Bagwell, Alou, Hidalgo...
If you pitch Verlander and Greinke early, you can still use him on short rest out of the bullpen for Game 7 while still keeping them on their normal routines for their actual starts/bulk innings.
I am struck by how good-natured these people are.. I wonder if it would be the same outside Yankee Stadium.. lol
It’s the most likely edge for him to have- that would be game 3 in a row for the Yankees bullpen and they’d have to get 9 innings. I’d rather have the SP there and would give us the edge. I’d bet Vegas would agree.
Greinke has a 9 era at Yankee stadium. Come on Greinke... I’ll take 6 innings 3 runs. We have to get to Tanaka.
