If Verlander is available on regular rest, he will pitch.

I'm surprised there are people that actually think otherwise.

This is what I want. Let’s get greedy. It’s very doable. The team has a good, confident vibe about them right now. Winning will do that though. Let’s get the next two.

lol. Let’s ask the Yankees which they would prefer and that’s the answer. Would they prefer to face our Bullpen in game 6 or Cole on short rest in game 6? The answer is 100% they would want to face our pen in game 6.
If this is the situation game 7 doesn’t ****ing matter. Game 6 only matters and Cole is the answer. I’m willing to bet you any amount of money on this if you would like?

Greinke and JV would also be available for game 7 for 1-2 innings each.

Right now they only have to beat one of them. If the Astros win the bullpen game or Grienke’s next start then they’d have to beat both of them. You are getting ahead of yourself a little.

It’s up for debate depending on what you feel are the Astros best options in a 2-2 series should they lose a game 5 regardless who’s pitching.

If the series is tied 2-2, yes, I think Verlander has a higher chance of losing a game 5 vs a game 6.

    If there’s a rainout tomorrow, game 4 isn’t a bullpen game.

You all are way overthinking this. You simply pitch your best pitchers the first time they available on normal rest. That gives you the best chance of winning games and series. You don't hold Greinke back so you can give yourself an earlier bullpen game. Greinke and Verlander give you the opportunity to win the series in 5 if there's a rain delay, so you do it.

Yes... unless Grienke loses game 4. Then pitching Verlander in game 5 guarantees nothing as far as winning the series goes.

I'm sure they'd rather face the bullpen in game 6, if their only goal is to win game 6. That's not the Astros' goal, though.

And if you lose game 7, game 6 didn't matter.

This is just terrible in a world of modern analytics where we know better than cliches. This is the equivalent of punting at your own 30 on 4th-and-1 with a chance to clinch the game because that's what old school nonsense tells you to do. The Astros are way smarter than this - that's why they are so good at what they do.

I think Urquidy has a higher chance of losing game 5 than Verlander. At which point we face elimination twice.

You try to win the series as quickly as you can. Operating under the assumption Verlander will lose a game 5 but will be a rock in a possible game 6 facing elimination seems more than a little strange to me.

Especially after today when they had to go 5 innings. But I think they will try to have Tanaka go like 8 in game 5 if no rain delay. If rain delay I think they start Tanaka in game 4.

I have no idea what the right answer is but I lean toward pitching the guys on normal rest when available.

Not overthinking anything. I think Hinch has Urquidy go on Thursday for sure. It is the lowest pressure scenario.

Yes, you try to win it in 5, but dont screw yourself in a potential Game 6 or 7. If we lose Game 4 and 5 and our season hangs on Urquidys shoulders, Hinch would probably get roasted if Urquidy cant get us to a Game 7 Cole.
