    bump

    quick question..

ordered a new HDD to add to my PC...it can run sata 3.0...do sata 3.0 have 2 wires (1 for power, 1 for data) or does it just take 1 and it handles both?

    2. Power cable to power supply (obviously) and data cable to motherboard.

man **** power spec and Microcenter. Stick to best buy. I bought a desktop power spec and had to drive 7 times to get it fixed, it's a nightmare driving there when you live in spring. Horrible customer service and slow at repairing.

    semi necro bump:

gonna build a new PC once the graphics card shortage hopefully resolves itself soon?

anyways, will a noctua NH-D15 fit inside a Lian Li Lancool II mesh case?

I've been saying that for about 2 years or so now... :D

Supply is staying in stock longer lately ... well, sorta. But the prices on video cards are still wonky even though they've started coming down a bit. Hoping crypto mining stupidity slows down more with ETH 2.0 (lol). Of course, now I'm wondering if I should just wait until the end of the year (supposedly) for the RTX 4000's.

Everything is back in stock. It's like 2006 again.

If those do actually show up in the Fall, they won't be in stock and your cycle will repeat. I was just waiting for the time I didn't need to go through any of the BS to build a computer. That time has come.

Yeah, I agree, but I'm hoping if the 4000's do come, prices may drop on the 3000's, but then they'll probably get rid of inventory in the 3000's first. Who knows. Part of the BS for me is the inane prices. I mean, can I pay it? Sure. But I feel like an dumbass paying $1200-$1900 for a video card when that used to be a pretty damn good whole PC just maybe just 3-4 years ago. My current PC was built back around 2015 and I'm scared to look what I paid to build it. As it stands, I still may take the plunge in a couple of months. I just hope my current's mobo doesn't give up the ghost on me in the meantime - I've work this thing and its video card to death.

CPU prices have remained the same, probably dropped with inflation. Avoid ddr5 (and the Z690) and you are getting great value for money. 1900 bucks is a 3090 at Microcenter, I never do high level builds. You can get a 3070 for sub 800 in stock.

Hell, I really don't care as much about the other components - just the video card, right now. You can get a 3070 TI FTW3 Ultra for $830 right now, if you want. And I still think that's too much. If you want the bulk pack version, they can be had for $780 (but not in stock).

I'm trying too hard to get a 3080 or 3080Ti to somewhat future-proof the purchase, I guess. A 3070 still isn't worth the price to me as a move up from a 1080. For example, a 3070 and a 1080 TI are somewhat comparable from what I gather.

I'm still using 3080 ti on desktop ... But then got some stupid deal on a gaming laptop with a 3070... I have always built desktops but with the gpu mess, I'm almost thinking I'll stay with laptops... Loaded alienware with the high end 3070 (not the junk one/lower power) - $1150 shipped with tax.... My evga ultra 3080 ti is just mining now, lol. If I didn't get lazy on mining I'd probably have been near even.

    What is your display?

To be honest, anything beyond a 3070 is fairly wasteful, in most cases.

And while the 1080ti was a beast, the DLSS feature on the RTX cards is pretty sweet.

I'm only running @ 1440 on a 32" right now, but may upgrade to 4k in the next couple of years. And I really don't want to upgrade the video card again for another 3-4 years at the soonest. I was actually shocked the performance improvement wasn't as much as I thought it would be after 5-6 years going to a 3070 when I'd be forking over $800 or so at the moment. I think the MSRP on those things are around $600.

And, yeah, ray tracing and DLSS would probably be worth it, but then only for the games supporting it, I guess, and a not a ton of games I play require them.

The problem with 4k is even the 3090ti isn't really powerful enough to max out a high refresh rate 4k display.

I personally can't even tell a difference between 1440p and 4k, but I can tell the difference between 120 fps and 60 fps.

I wouldn't be in a hurry to jump to 4k
