Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim was behind the wheel of a car that hit a pedestrian on a highway, killing the man, the Onondaga County (New York) District Attorney told WSYR on Thursday.

DA Bill Fitzpatrick told the station that the man was outside his car on Interstate 690 after being involved in another unrelated accident due to bad weather. Boeheim's car struck the man around midnight.

Boeheim, 74, had coached the Orange against Louisville at the Carrier Dome earlier Wednesday night.

Fitzpatrick told the station that Boeheim is cooperating with the investigation. According to the DA, no evidence of alcohol or drugs was detected, and Boeheim was traveling at the proper speed for the highway.

No reason why a 74 year old man should be driving on the highway at midnight.

That being said, crossing a highway is never a good idea. But prayers out to that man's family.

Syracuse is just starting to click. With the Duke game coming up on Saturday, I hope this investigation finishes.

First car lost control and hit a guardrail. Boeheim was driving home after a game.

“The occupants then exited the vehicle and proceeded to walk on the highway within close proximity to that vehicle,” Syracuse police said in a 9:51 a.m. news release. “An oncoming vehicle noticed the disabled car and tried avoiding the vehicle, which was in the middle of the road.”
    ...
Driving conditions after the game were icy in spots. It’s unclear if that played any role in the initial crash or Boeheim’s involvement.

    This is silly.

What does this have to do with anything? Boeheim was abiding by the law, driving the speed limit, and never lost control. It has nothing to do with his age. It's just an unfortunate set of circumstances, and my condolences go out to the families involved.

On a side note, Boeheim seems to find himself in the middle of some pretty unlucky situations. I feel bad for him.

I was just poking at Boeheims age. Nothing serious. But yes both families have been greatly effected along with the whole Syracuse campus. Moods have changed with duke coming up tomorrow.
