    Paris liberation made 'whites only'

Always good to know your history.
To know how manipulation of the lasting image is utilized.
History is definitely written [and corrupted] by the victors.

Wow. What's ironic to me is that pre-war Paris was considered one of the places where Blacks could have something approaching a "normal" life. That's always been my impression, at any rate. If nothing else, RR, this highlights how far we've come.

From what I understand, it wasn't so much that the French were accepting of African-Americans, so much that they were more subtle with their racism than Americans (especially southerners) were.

Thanks, River. I learned something today.

Well, from the article, it sounds like it wasn't de Gaulle who had the problem with the Africans in the division, he just wanted them to French. Sounds like the Americans were the ones insisting on them being white.

(And, there could have been good strategic reasons -- Nazi Germany was on the ropes at this point, but not yet defeated. Still needing support from whites in America and in France, and acquiscence from Nazis, playing to racist preferences might have been wise.)

Surprisingly, it was much worse after World War I.

So what if it was from 1945? Did you know this or not? There are things we may read for the 1st time from WWI, from the middle age ...
All are more interesting than the nonsense you regurgitate!

19th century France was super racist and anti-Semitic. It was not much better early 20th either. If Vegas had been doing odds in 1880 of "which European nation will start a massive war based on the idea of aryan supremacy within the next 60 years" France would have been the huge favorite.

Blacks were better off in France pre-war than in the US, though. But only because they were less scared of them than American whites. They still would have thought they were way superior.
