that is the max he might get.

Remember we don’t have state income tax. When can offer less and he still gets more.

Payroll would be over $200M. No way they have money for all 3 of Wheeler ($50M+), Miley ($30M), and Grandal ($40M+).

That Gerrit Cole money should be spent on Yordan Alvarez, George Springer, Lance McCullers, Carlos Correa, Roberto Osuna, Kyle Tucker

Gerrit Cole, Michael Brantley, Yuli Gurriel, Josh Reddick, Joe Smith all should be gone because of age and being overpaid elsewhere.

Keep the Young Position Players and Especially your Closer here long term.

Yordan and Tucker aren’t due for a payday for a long time. In addition, it’s not like Cole is entering the twilight of his career... dude just turned 29.

I find it perplexing that there are many on here content with letting perhaps the best pitcher this yr simply walk. I get that he’ll be costly but the “don’t bother we have others to pay” mindset is asinine.

Why would Wheeler be 50M? or Miley 30? or Grandal 40? Currently 6, 4.5, 16. Verlander is only 28. Well, the numbers are too far off, I must not understand what you said.

Gerrit Cole hired Scott Boras means he wants a long term contract. 6 to 7 years $200 million

Astros will only go 3 years with Cole, because of other players rookie contracts end.

Extremely unlikely we break the luxury tax threshold to pay Cole for the next 4-6 years. For the next 3-4 years it would be a dream come true, but it would have major implications for shortening our chance at staying competitive after we weather some regression.

Luhnow is a different GM. See the Cardinals for evidence of that. He never blew up their organization to rebuild. He rode that wave here because the tsunami was already in motion.

Look for Cole to be gone and Luhnow to search for the next Cole/Morton/Miley.

Eventually the Astros advantage in this area will be over since everyone is poaching their talent. We need to enjoy this while we can.

I don’t see everyone poaching our talent, and you are assuming there are not more pots of gold under the rainbow.

Very true. The Astros should have a ton of pitchers on the cusp of greatness wanting to play for them like Miley. The Astros have turned a promising Cole into Randy Johnson. Who wouldn't want to come play here in the hopes of upping their game and making a ton of money.

Just look at the K increase since coming to the stros.

Some of you might of caught it, but Verlander once said in an interview this season about Cole, "... his time with the Astros." Love to keep him, but Boras ain't going to let it happen.

Luhnow was not the GM in St. Louis.

I stand corrected there. He was in the scouting department. I still believe that his mindset and philosophy had a heavy impact on their organization, and likely vice versa.

Welcome to the darkside, we've been expecting you. Here we pay players, the fans are happy, there is luxury, and everyone wins. It's called success. No way we don't put down a money contract for the best player in baseball. It's time to own who we are. Go big or go home.

You have to keep the best pitcher in the world. This is common sense. If you have to get rid of Carlos Correa and sign Cole. Just with him pitching, gives you a better chance to win than Correa.

The 10 million dollar or so, one year contract Correa will have next season is not what is prohibiting the Astros from giving Cole 200 million. I wish I would stop seeing that as a suggestion.

That's a coin flip. Yes, Astros fandom is mad at Carlos for his inability to stay healthy. However, on the field he is one of the top 5 players at a very weak position.

Cole is also at his peak now. We’d be paying based on that.

If Crane wants to pay huge penalties for going beyond the tax, cool. But it’s not happening, not for 4-6 years.
