I mentioned in another thread that PFF had the Miami OLine ranked dead last going into this season. And that was with Tunsil, new LG, returning injured C, new RT. Just sayin'. While Tunsil is a clear and definite upgrade at LT, we won't know the overall impact he has on the rest of the line until we see it in games.
Lines also take some time to mature as a unit, regardless of the individual talent level. In the end, the overall talent has been upgraded over what was there the last 2 years... but yes, they still have to come together.
I have another idea: Fire the coach/GM? Perhaps a better coach would help with that. That's even worse. At least if they were not well thought thru, it would explain the lack of direction.
I've been saying the same too. And honestly I was ready to go into the season with Roderick Johnson as the starter at LT.
How do people hate this trade? The cost of moving from the 20’s to the top 5 in a draft historically has been an extra first and second. The Texans just did that and acquired a guaranteed top 10 tackle from day one. Please remember that even the Trent Williams and Duane Browns of the world struggle there first few years. The other thing here as well The Texans received Will Fuller insurance as well which is needed for a team trying to win now. You gave up late first round picks which are never a guarantee no matter what player you choose for a pro bowler in your weakest position. And people are actually unhappy? Baffling.
Did OB say if Stills will start in the slot? If you can put he and will on the field at the same time that would be awesome.
I assume the Texans will lead the league in 40 yard plus passes this year. One thing this trade does as well that you bring up, teams are a lot less likely to play man or single high safety against the Texans.
I have mixed emotions on this trade. On one hand, it’s nice to see the Texans make a major move to address their offensive line issues and protect Deshaun Watson. On the other, they paid a huge cost to do so, and, in the NFL, first and second-round draft picks are like gold.
If Miami drafts well and doesn't screw this up somehow, they should be really good in a few years. Reminds me of the JJ's rebuilding the Cowboys.
No guarantee that those are late first round picks. All it takes is an injury to Watson, or a repeat of two years ago with guys dropping all over the place, and you're in the top 10. I'm reminded of Daryl Morey's quote when the Rockets declined to match the tender on Chandler Parsons. Something like, "in order to win, you have to be the team that finds the Chandler Parsons' of the world, not the team that overpays him". So while this year may be exciting and the line is finally on the verge of being good, there are long term ramifications of this that could prohibit sustained success.
How many championships has Daryl Morey brought to Houston? Jerry West seems to always trade and buy his way to rings no matter what situation. If Watson is hurt, the Texans are screwed either way so that’s irrelevant.
Why is this different than trading for a draft pick? NFL hard cap. It's the same reason you can't build a team full of free agents. Rookie draft pick get paid many years of rookie scale. This is significantly more than OBJ cost the Browns. This is significantly more than Kahlil Mack cost the Bears. If you can't or don't want to understand the details of the cap, hopefully that should be enough to help you put it in perspective. In a couple of years when they have pay Watson and give Tunsil a premium deal they're going to hit a wall - no cheap high draft picks, no money to sign quality free agents. If you had a team ready to break through to a Super Bowl, that tradeoff may make sense. This is a ticket to what the GARM used to call the "mediocracy treadmill".
The reason why people are unhappy is because A. When teams move up to top 5, they are trying to get a franchise quarterback, not a maybe top 10 OT. B. When teams get a draft pick, they also get the ability to screw over that pick by paying them way less than market value, whereas the Texans are going to be paying Tunsil as one of if not the highest paid tackles either this year or next year. If you like this trade because you believe 1sts are pretty worthless, then please dont complain like most Texans fans every time a Texan gets injured and the next man up cant play football. Because without cheap draft picks a team pretty much cant sustain any injuries
Hopefully somebody in the Star Chamber they're using instead of a GM knows how to restructure contracts.
