Meh, on a radio show your job is to draw listeners. "Piquing his interest" means nothing until his list actually expands. His interest might also be piqued by the Nuggets, Spurs, Timberwolves, Pelicans, and Celtics. Means nothing.

You answered your own question when you said "two great passers." Paul and Harden like to get around 10 assists every night. With both on our team, everyone will eat. Harden and Paul aren't just two great passers; they're the two greatest assist guys in the NBA right now. Nobody will get more great shots than the Rockets these guys will be passing to.

Statistical studies have shown that a team's record late in the regular season (March and April) tends to have very little predictive value in terms of how well they will perform in the playoffs and in the upcoming season. In fact, early season records have a much better predictive value.

This is because many teams are not actually giving close to 100% effort during this time. A bunch of losing teams are outright tanking or at least giving young player minutes that they don't deserve for "development" purposes. The better teams in the league are often resting their better players, or not quite fully healthy players, in preparation for playoffs. Just about the only teams trying hard at this period are the average teams chasing one of the lower playoff spots, and maybe some teams who still care about playoff seed sand home court advantages.

So, Portland's late winning record in the regular season can very well be fool's gold.
