After the disaster of going 5 for 30 from three and us being dead last in the league in shooting from midrange (only 11% of our shots!), are we seriously going to continue this Vernon Maxwell / JR Smith bombs away mentality?

I am okay with us shooting the three when you get it after a few passes and you're open or your name is Troy, but other than that we should drive more: either to the basket or a bit closer for the midrange shot. By driving and at least trying to get a bit closer, you can force the defense to react and pass to someone near the basket in case the shot is no longer there.

I am more concerned about this mentality than our bench in general.

    PFs can shoot midrange

Guards and SFs mostly 3s but with the occasional 2s to beat the clock or pick and pop

3pt will make you lose in the first round of the playoffs. Can someone show a comparison of 3pts vs 2pt in the playoffs.

i dont like morey's "3 or layup" strategy. no longer playing the game, its playing the stats. if u have a good mid range shot that u can make u take it.

The Spurs bombed Miami all day with threes. There were 40 Converted 4 point plays last postseason. How did we forget so quickly. The 3 point shot is here to stay.

Man, I just hope they make the shots come the real thing. I don't care if we score a 100 points on free throws as long as we win.

Adding a midrange expands the teams game dramatically. I understand the 'advanced stats' of it. But it doesn't tell the whole story.

    Playoffs last year:

    2pointers .455

3pointers .358 (effectively .538 and thus worth making an offense around)

The reason you develop a midrange threat is not because it's a good setup, it's so when teams key on the other two locations, you still have offense.

The NBA% from 10-15 feet is 41.7% and from 16-23 (inside the 3pt arc) is 38.3%. It's 64% at the rim. AKA feed Dwight and shoot threes. AKA Get great at the post game, including passing out of the post.

I'm not as eloquent with graphs as DT, but sports in general is a "stats" game. Rox 95 - Suns 92. That's a stat.

As for OP's midrange vs 3pt question, I'll use 2 examples.
    1. 30% of 20 shots = 6 shots. That's 12 pts w/2's & 18 pts w/3's. To get 18 pts with 2's, you have to take 30 shots or shoot 45%.
    2. 35% of 20 shots =7 shots. That's 14 pts w/2's & 21 pts w/3's. To get 21 pts with 2's, you have to take 30 shots or shoot 52.5%.
The real question is how many players do we have that shoots 35% from 3 (4 or 5) vs 52.5% from 2 (1 or 2).

Ok, I'm not eloquent with words either!

The NBA says more 3pt shooting. Three point shots have increased almost every year since the line came into existence( excluding the 3 years of the 22 ft line.). The number of 3's the Rockets take now will probably be average in a few years.
