Robinson projected as top talent in 2012. What changed?

Looks like he was getting stuffed all day by longer defenders in college as well. Not looking good for future post skills. Oh well, at least we can play him ala Asik and give him dunks.

 

Optimism is cool, but this isn't all on TRob being in Sacramento. The kid clearly has a much longer way to go than many would have hoped.

Doesn't mean he can't become solid or great player. He's had as good a season as Nash did his rookie year. And there's plenty of cases of players developing slowly. Robinson himself developed extremely slowly in college.

And let me say I'm definitely in favor of the trade. Garbage out, increased cap room, and the option on Robinson.

But I'm not holding my breath he becomes GREAT. If he does, yay. But I have concerns. before his junior year he was nothing special in college. perhaps because he was behind more senior players and it was just a wait your turn type deal, and that's somewhat true. but even still, once he exploded as a junior, so so much of his game has been about his athleticism for so long... the kid has a lot to work on.

People point to Blake. For one, Blake has supernatural athleticism. Regardless of what it says on paper, Blake's athleticism at his size translates to the NBA game in a fairly unique way, even among other unique athletes. But even with that, Blake didn't come into the league as devoid of a "half-court" offensive and defensive skill-set as Robinson appears to have currently.

I hope Robinson develops, but I think more than anything what has happened is his athleticism hasn't translated the way Blake's or Amare's did, and short of that his game needs more refinement and development than expected. In short, he's not as good as expected, and has more of an uphill battle than expected.

But he should get better. Hopefully change of scenery helps.

hopefully he can improve and start producing here in houston.. he'll be playing for a team that wants to win championships and there's plenty of minutes at that PF spot.

 

This. I do hope he pans out and I'm kind of holding my breath. There have been plenty of athletic guys killing it in college and never amount to anything in the pro.

Work ethic and IQ will determine how much he will develop.

BTW, I don't agree that we are giving up crap for him. Patterson is not a bad player. He's just the whipping boy here on CF.

 

I don't think anybody thinks Patterson is bad. He's just already peaked as a player, and he'll never be more than a fringe starter on an average team. His rebounding is terrible, and his defense is mediocre at best.

Robinson provides much more upside and is still a much more attractive trade piece.

 

Only as a scorer. Robinson was a better rebounder and defender.

 

I think the game is too fast for him right now. And I think he put a lot of pressure on himself and it`s killing him that he can`t play to his potential in the NBA so far.

Sure he needs a better offensive game - and sure he needs to be in better position on defense. But with his skillset right now he could and should be a valueable asset (very good rebounder, active on the offensive boards, finding ways to get open for easy dunks - size up his man on defense). He just needs to get his mindset right.

Who knows if he ever becomes a star. He has the athleticisim and the work ethic. But lots of guys with potential never really pan out. But out of all our big men, he has the most potential (yeah, even higher than DMo) and he is young and on a cheap contract - so in the very least he should be very moveable.

I just hope we see him play significant minutes this year.

 

I get the feeling this kid will absolutely thrive almost immediately on put-backs and dump-offs from Harden and Lynn.

The rest of his game will develop as the easy baskets give him the confidence to use and improve the rest of his skills.

He is a guy that is worth taking a look at - but just because you are drafted highly does not make you a player, we had Thabeet - and he was drafted number 2 overall.

T Rob is another undersized PF, and is not uber explosive, he has a GREAT motor though, and that is a huge thing, half of success is desire.

I do worry though, he was Marcus Morris backup in college - just saying..

Am I crazy in thinking that just playing at our pace with actual willing and skilled passers, Robinson's stats could see a huge boost even if he doesn't actually improve?

And if that were to occur, wouldn't that increase his trade value dramatically?

 

Environment is everything sometimes. Sacramento just isn't good for anyone. I think we just picked up a true 5th pick and he'll perform as such here. Morey just busted a 211.

 

I hope Robinson realizes that he just landed in the perfect situation. His future is his to make, minutes, touches, a big contract down the road, major media exposure in China. He should be chomping at the bit to prove he deserves to start.

 

Wesley Johnson projected as a top talent too. Just because a guy has one good year in college when he's much older and experienced (and bigger) than everyone else doesn't mean his play will translate to the NBA. He doesn't have the feel for the game that an all-star caliber prospect should have. Neither did Wesley Johnson. Morey should trade high on him as soon as possible.

 

Forgot to add: Wesley Johnson was 23 in his rookie year. Thomas Robinson will already be 22 in a couple weeks. This isn't a high potential player.

Up his value, then ship him out before everyone catches on.

I view Robinson as someone with high floor, high ceiling, but low odds of reaching that ceiling.

Reason for high floor: Robinson has high motor, legit size, a knack for rebounding(especially offensive rebounds that we currently lack), and a smooth shooting touch. Basically, he likely can reach Patterson+rebounding without much issue.

Reason for high ceiling: He has the capability of handling the ball for a PF that he can work on. He can certainly learn to finish around the basket with more experience. His freakish athleticism means he has the capability of developing inside moves.

Reason for unlikelihood to reach that ceiling: Old for a rookie. In general bigs don't tend to develop their games as easy as guards. Require intense dedication to go from his level of rawness to enough skills to reach ceiling. Require high BBIQ which may or may not exist.

Overall, I think the Rockets fleeced the Kings in terms of talent swap. And unlike Thabeet or Jordan Hill, I truly believe TRob has a legit shot at justifying his draft position.

 

Robinson's rebounds, speed (faster than a lot of guards) and finishing are going to be tremendous if McHale wants to go small and plays him at 5.
