Repulsive speech is not the same as ultra violence, and the number of violent Muslims is just a tad higher than the number of violent Christians.

    Correct.

mc mark made similar posts in other threads - according to him, that stupid Youtube video made by this guy in California "led to the death" of the US ambassador in Libya. Now he equates the Taliban and some fool saying something stupid.

Apparently mc mark does not understand the difference between (stupid) speech and actual violence and murder.

    Sad.

Sihks in Wisconsin and Gab Giffords want to know the difference too.

Ignorance and intolerant religious views lead to violence among the extremists that exist among both Abrahamic religions.

mc mark is reiterating what Aaron Sorkin correctly labeled them as.

The shooter in the Giffords shooting never declared his motive, certainly no religious motive was given. The Sikh shooting guy was probably more of a racist ******* than religiously motivated. So, two bad examples.

But anyway: Having intolerant views is one - very bad - thing, murdering people because one follows an intolerant ideology is on a completely different - much worse - level. I'm sure you understand that.

    GOP is completely falling apart.

It's a bigtexxx meltdown of an entire party. This could be historic if it keeps going.

    GOP - police your own!

And I'm sure you understand that your obsession over the matter renders your opinion relatively useless.

That is your irrelevant and uneducated opinion.

If you don't understand the difference between expressing intolerant views and murdering people because of intolerant views and try to distract from your ignorance by being snippy - your problem.

Yes, but it is still a difference whether you have intolerant views or you act on them by murdering someone.

    Do you understand that difference?

E.g., not everyone who doesn't like black people goes around and shoots them.

    Is he still a racist?

    Yes.

    Is he a murderer?

    No.

Does the legal system treat the guy who actually is a murderer differently from someone who "just" holds intolerant views?

    Absolutely.

The legal system is in place to determine justice for those who break the law.

It has no bearing over the psychological state of those who are controlled by paranoia and fear until one of those breaks the law.

Until the government can read minds and make preemptive arrests like in Minority Report your argument is pretty dim.

There are startling similarities between the extremist Tea party crazies and Muslim extremists.

What you have is a poor, uneducated populace that eventually breeds a small contingent of angry, fearful individuals who will resort to violence under the name of religion when they have no other recourse.

In my opinion, religion is dangerous for the underprivileged because it becomes an end-all trump card in any argument with those who were never taught proper critical thinking skills. "Because My God says so" becomes their only recourse when intellectually outmatched.

The educated religious tend to use their belief system as a spiritual guidebook to enlighten and help make the world a suitable place. They also understand tolerance.

The uneducated with their religious fervor and jealously try to use their "holy" books as punishment mandates against those who don't conform.

Just my "uneducated and uninformed" opinion.

I agree with a lot of what you say, but it is still wrong to equate people who don't resort to violence with people who do resort to violence, even if both display signs of intolerance.

Personally, from what I have seen, the Tea Party has a lot of intolerant dumbasses in it, but that still doesn't make them American Taliban. The Taliban have taken it much, much, much further.

To equate the two seems to me like an exaggeration for political gain.

Are there some parallels? Yes, to some extent. Trust me, I have seen it first hand, I had a host family while I was in Houston who were very, very, very conservative and not tolerant of other beliefs, and I didn't like it.

Still - is it the same or even comparable? No.

I just realized that indeed I have contributed to bringing this thread off-topic, by responding to the "American Taliban" remark, and harping on what I believe is still a difference. Sorry about that.

Going back to the guy quoted in the OP:

Someone who holds views like that is, in my opinion, a deranged individual. I don't even understand how someone who is supposedly educated can say something so stupid and offensive. I think that even in his own party, many will think very badly of him now.

I know someone ultra-conservative in the Republican party who has a disabled child himself. I am sure that person will not take lightly to a remark like this...

Well if you only look at the end result, in a sense you're right. But I tend to look at the root of the problem, and I think the similarities exist although tend to be more prevalent in ultra-violent extremist Muslim camps.

They obviously aren't the Taliban, but the comparison should serve as a wakeup call that a lot of them are on the road to becoming what they despise.

I don't disagree. I am against extremism of any kind, and against intolerance and ignorance. And what this guy here said is despicable and ignorant. I can only pity such people. I was born with a disability myself, and I am pretty sure that neither my parents nor I are at fault for this.

Actually, what the guy said is kind of similar to what some people in uneducated cultures who believe in reincarnation think - they think if a child is born with a disability, it is a punishment for sins in an earlier life - also a silly thought...but for someone supposedly educated in a civilized, Western country to say something like this, who even represents a lot of people - just stupid.

The tea party was bred in a much more stable environment than the Taliban. A group like the Taliban would never exist in the U.S. because it would be shot down immediately. If these neo-conservative bible thumpers were bred in a much more unstable environment such as the Taliban in Pakistan who knows how violent these people would be. They already love arming themselves up to the teeth and always talk about civil war against the Obama administration.
