    I think if there were a way to keep him healthy, my answer would be Yao Ming by a long shot. Much the same might be said of Ralph Sampson (IF longer-term health could somehow be assured). If the same health/fitness scenarios as existed in reality, my vote goes in for Elvin Hayes.

    Knowing what I know now? Yao Ming.

    Since you know the peak year(s) of Yao and when he will be out of the league, I would do everything I can to trade for contending pieces during his peak.

    Francis and Griffin weren't drafted by the Rockets.

    Richard Jefferson probably deserves mention even though he wouldn't be at the top of my list.

    I can't even imagine the Rockets or PSJ without Dream.

    But for our purposes here, I'd go with Ralph playing the 5....and likely staying healthy.

    That's the thing. Ralph got hurt on a freak play hitting the deck at the Garden and was never the same. While I'm not sure if Yao was destined from the beginning to fall apart, I imagine that after he put on 30-40 lbs of muscle his feet and ankles were basically ticking time bombs.

    Oh, I don't think there's any question that the added muscle was a huge reason for the demise of Yao Ming. But, playing for China every summer, I believe, was the biggest contributor. They just worked that dude into the ground and seemed to not care about his NBA career. Maybe I'm just bitter, I don't know...

    If Moses Malone had been drafted by the Rockets it would be a no brainer, but he wasn't.

    Tough choice between Elvin Hayes and Ralph Sampson but I'm going with Big E. in his prime he averaged 28 ppg, 17 rpg and about 4 blocks a game. Those are monster numbers in any era.

    Yao Ming.

    Although I wouldn't beef him up. I would have kept him around 285-290. Physically would have focused a lot more on his endurance, then anything else. Would also used him a lot more in the high post, given his great shooting touch and passing ability.

    Not mention I would hire the entire PHX medical/training Staff. :grin:

    Why would anyone pick Sampson? You could not build a team around him. Rodney McCray was a better NBA player than Sampson.

    Props to whomever answered Horry.

    Either John Lucas or Steve Francis* can be considered.

    Still go wiith Yao, I suppose. Presumably if you know what you do now you change your patterns with him.
