the fallacy of the "lin will cost the knicks $43m in year 3" argument

    How could that be true? The cap hit would have already counted at only 5 and 5 the first 2 years in NY.......waiving him to not take the 15 in year 3 would not be possible.

    I believe that he's refering to the "stretch provision" that was added to the new CBA.

    Basically, if you waive a player then you have the option of spreading the cap hit for the remaining money out over more years. It's two times the number of remaining years plus 1 year.

    So, if you cut Lin in the 3rd year then you could spread the $15M cap hit evenly across the next three seasons ( (1 x 2) + 1 = 3). So, you'd get a $5M cap hit for three consecutive seasons.
