So I am the manager of a Tee-Ball team for my daughters softball league. It is a requirement from the league that each team volunteer with at least 4 people to run the snack bar during the season.

They scheduled our 8 person team for a Saturday where we were barely able to scounge up the volunteers needed. It got rained out and they rescheduled us for a Monday from 4:15-7:45. All of us work and couldn't volunteer so I told them that and they said OK. Now they decided they were going to enact a rule that says our 4-7 year old girls will be the only team not to get trophies this year as a result.

I ended up buying trophies for all my girls anyway, but I thought this rule was totally ridiculous and I've never heard of any other league that requires this of parents. I got into an argument with the league president about how ridiculous the rule is and that "Forced Volunteerism" is not volunteerism at all and that half the parents skate by while the other half volunteer and do all the work.

The league president stated that lots of other leagues operate the same way and I had never heard of any other league that required volunteerism to begin with and enforced it otherwise (no trophies or playoffs).

What have your experiences been with youth sports leagues? Am I wrong in thinking this rule is a scam and that they should just charge people the real cost of doing business instead of forcing people to volunteer so others that dont volunteer can get a cheaper registration cost?

The league that I play in did this, but then ended up hiring people after like two games.
