    May be the case, but they didn't know that with certainty then.

    Hard to know the situation though. They may have wanted to wait on a surgery option.

    yao's main surgery- that ended his career_ was not an ankle but navicular stress fracture. couple o bones under the ankle and on top of the foot.

    When Yao was considering the surgery he spoke to Patterson about the recovery process etc, because he had it in College.

    I recall it from some Chronicle articles.
