Have you've been to other forums? It's very frowned upon. Since current topics tend to discuss current and recent events, a topic from 2004 would like it might be happening now and that gets annoying.
It's frowned upon even in here. It gets annoying that there is some NEWS source, then someone thinks it just happened a few minutes ago... and it pisses them off. While I agree with you, Xero, that there's no harm in doing that, I believe there should be some sort of "statute of limitations" for something like news or an event... if it's a discussion about which gordita we like better, or how we deal with cats on our yards, then fine... but not on an event... you know? What do YOU think, homey?
Nah, he said Neco-bump. Which planted an image in my head of someone crushing up Necco Wafers and snorting them.
I think it should be just the opposite. Bumping a news thread -- if there is an update that makes it relevant again -- seems like a legitimate bump. But, if there is just a conversation between 12 guys 5 years ago, you can't just pick up that conversation again. Four of those guys don't post anymore, three more don't remember ever participating in the first place. The rest have probably all changed their minds since. That conversation is dead and buried. Start a new one. Of course, that's a bit of a Catch-22. If you want to talk about big-ass gorditas, you can be criticized for bumping an old thread or criticized for starting a new thread when an old one already exists. You can't win.
CF now has a "Similar Threads" section that lists some old threads, so necro-bumps are probably even LESS necessary. I bumped up a 2 year old thread for Ghostbusters 3. I didnt know if it was better to post a new individual topic or make "efficient" use of the Contributing Member search function, since there are occasional gripes about that. Coulda gone either way, but if I posted a new topic it'd PROBABLY listed the older topic anyway so thats kinda a decent compromise.
I find it hard to believe that someone who joined Clutchfans in 2009 invented the word necrobump, a term used on most major internet message boards. A simple google search of 'necrobump' demonstrates its prevalence.
It depends on the thread. See there is a link in my sig. When news break, I break in with that thread.
If you want to talk about something in an old thread, the best way to do it is start a new thread with a link pointing to the old thread.
I joined CF in 2005ish, banned, then 3 yrs after banning rejoined in 2009. also, I invited the internet.
