If the US is going to invade a nation (which really should almost never happen), then they need to be in it for the long haul, like they did in Japan and Europe. How Iraq was handled is beyond negligent. Sam with the handling of Iraqi and Afghan supporters. We should have brought them to the USA.

 

I said legitimate reasons for starting or entering a war, and the strategy behind it, are the two most important factors. The US always has the capability, that is not in question, so that is also extremely important, but for us, it's the other two that are more important, since we know the US military is top notch. But however good or precise you are, without a legitimate reason and good strategy, you are doomed for failure.

We went to war with Japan and Germany for very legitimate reasons that the nation could stand behind. Moral high ground is needed in war; otherwise, we will just give up after major setbacks, and there is no war without setbacks.

We went to war in Afghanistan for very legitimate reasons that the nation also stood behind (90% or so approved at the start). But the strategy was terrible. We went in there to get rid of al-Qaeda, but the strategy changed to a war on terror that is completely open-ended with unreachable goals, ending up declaring axes of evil, invading Iraq, and nation building. That strategy didn't stand a chance of success.

We have no legitimate reasons to start a war with Iran. And strategy? So far, it's like a guy addicted to precision bombing, changing his mind from day to day on the goals, which need to be solidified to have a strategy to achieve them.
