That would be an absolute disaster and I don't think it's the plan at all. Andrews was really bad, Patterson is meh and Ingraham is meh+.
- Bills IOL Connor McGovern (71.6) - Titans IOL Kevin Zeitler (65.1) - Jets IOL Alijah Vera-Tucker (79.1, 2024) - Browns IOL Tevin Jenkins (76.2) - Panthers IOL Brady Christensen (69.9) - Commanders IOL Tyler Biadasz (67.2) - Lions IOL Graham Glasgow (65.3) - Packers IOL Sean Rhyan (68.9)
We need to draft a couple of IOL for depth this year and, hopefully, they can be quality starters in 27. It's most unfortunate that Caserio has been so terrible at drafting OL.
Kids eventually learn how to build Lego structures. The Texans have never learned to build an O line.
This is because they are going on their 4th ol coach since Caserio has been down on Kirby and all of the HC's have had different philosophies.
Yeah you're right and it's a good thing Caserio has no say whatsoever in which HC's, players, or schemes are chosen. Otherwise a big part of all of this would be on him. But I do believe Caserio often gets a bad rap for many of the OL draft picks. Caserio most likely gets together with the coaches and scouts, then draft decisions are made by committee. So many of the bad OL decisions are more than likely based on poor decisions by former OC and OL coaches (ex. Green was Lovie's guy). I do blame Caserio mostly for the OL Dollar Store Specials he picked up in FA the last few years. But this could also be because DeMeco wants all of the extra money going to his defense. Hopefully they will finally invest in the OL this year.
Caserio is responsible for the coaching choices, draft picks and signing players. Anyway the problem predates Caserio. The Texans in their entire existence have only had a good o-line under Kubiak.
it’s like the original sin of the org, going back to drafting David Carr with our inaugural 1st ever pick and then not investing in protection for his entire development cycle until he became shell shocked. It’s our scarlet letter as a franchise.
Ryans makes the final calls on these things. Caserio gets Ryans the players Ryans wants. The coaching staff is definitely under Ryans purview.
The common theme is ownership forced both Carr/CJ on the GM/HC. Neither should've been picked. Both have failed to put in the work and they are/were pansies who certainly weren't football 1st guys. But you're right, history is repeating itself.
So I get that signing guys to 1&2yr deals mitigates being stuck with bad contracts, but it’s a terrible strategy if you are trying to build a good offensive line. Perhaps more than any subset of positions in football, continuity on the o-line is critical. The best o-lines have the familiarity with each other, they know how each other moves, the communication is seamless. If you are constantly playing musical chairs with the o-line every offseason, you just aren’t gonna end up with a product that is truly reliable. I’m really surprised Caserio doesn’t understand this. Either get the draft picks right or make some solid investments in free agency, or both, but this short term bandaid bargain bin approach is stupid. Really stupid if u are trying to also develop a QB. I really hate this.
Was Slowik a Ryans choice? If so nothing has really changed. Ryans approves all coaches that are on his staff.
Ryans out here handpicking all of caserios boys from New England and John Carroll instead of people he’s worked with. He’s a real one!
Slowik and Strausser were Meco guys. Danny Barrett was a holdover. If Meco didn't want these coaches on his staff they wouldn't be here. Truth is CJ wanted an offense that he could have more freedom in, that's not the WCO. The EP system gives CJ the freedom within the offense he wanted. That's why the John Carroll guys are here and Meco is on board with the changes. BTW, I dont have an issue with the EP offense, the Pats just made a SB running this offense with a 2nd year QB.
I don’t agree. The Patriots offensive system looked like hot garbage in the playoffs and really ever since Brady was there. The Patriots were able to build the record to have home games in Foxboro in the playoffs because they had one the easiest schedules in living memory. There is only one John Carrol College coaching tree, or branch, or whatever. Here. Because of Caserio. Nepotism is not a virtue.
