Stone and Ime both need to be fired. This team has no direction and is filled with redundancy which is the lack of shot makers. The team is going to have to make a hard decision between Sengun and Thompson, because they both can't shoot and in today's NBA you just can't put two non-shooters on the court together and expect to win in the playoffs.
I feel like GMs throw stone a high price in order to negotiate and Stone just gets offended and leaves. 0 negotiating skills with other GMs.
Yep, which is easily countered with the "We finished 2nd, last year and got bounced by a pathetic Warriors team because we couldn't shoot."
Net sum of the big assets moved during Stone's tenure Harden, a FRP that likely won't convey, and a pick used on Joan Beringer for Sengun, Durant, Tari Eason, Reed Sheppard, 2 FRPs, and 2 FRP swaps.
Stone does not go the extra mile, or he lets others do that for him. He is the Anti Billy Beane from Money Ball. He does use leverage on players that they fall in line with contracts.
Stone: "You want to take far less money than another team would pay you, don't you?" Player / Agent: Stone:
I think that the Rockets could do better than Stone - but he isn't bad, he is just average. Also, it would completely depend on how well TF would do in looking for someone new to run his organization. Stone and his staff do their homework - they are usually risk adverse and cautious, so they avoid making a lot of mistakes. Those are generally good things. I don't think that Stone has the level of detail or understanding of the game that is needed to be a great GM - but he also is better than half the GM's in the league.
I would say this is incorrect. Guys that can't shoot basically are guys that don't look good in blue jeans. Offensive rebounding getting more tries at the basket is basically the same as a high on base percentage giving a team more tries at the plate. Being good in the regular season, but not in the playoffs is the same as being good in the regular season, but not in the postseason. Not trading for a PG to force the coach to play the PG of your choice is the same as trading away a 1B, so the coach has to play the 1B of your choice. Stone's problem is more with not having a Top 10 player which isn't as big an issue in baseball.
I did not mean he is nowhere near as competent, I meant that he does not go the 15% extra mile to find that Jokic in the 2nd round. To find that statistical underdog guy with 1 elite surplus and develop him......he is 55 and has not done that yet. He did not show that 110% passion for the NBA.....he is the typical I punch the clock and I have done my job type. He punched that clock deservedly so though.
He has a chance this year at Draft night, the Rockets own a 2nd round pick in an excellent draft, see what he does with it.
Jokic or comparable talent has never been in the 2nd round during his tenure as GM. On punching the clock, I've seen nothing that suggests he doesn't work long hours based on passion. I've seen the opposite. Barely been a year (or has it been 2?) since you berated Stone for never having traded for an All-Star. He's done that twice now so I guess you had to move the goal post. Now, it is basically Stone sucks because he's not drafted the best player in the game in the 2nd round. The Rockets have drafted Sengun and Reed, who are statistical underdogs. Basically, you have chosen to dislike Stone. I don't think anything short of a championship would change your view on Stone, and even then, you would probably say he was lucky. If Championship is the bar, it is basically acknowledging he's a good GM and we won't know if he's a good enough GM to meet the bar except in hindsight. Presti is unavailable. Connelly has a long-term deal with the TWolves. The lottery gave Wemby to the Spurs. Stevens isn't going anywhere. Maybe there are 2-4 other guys worthy of having over Stone, but odds are they aren't going anywhere. The Calvin Booth's of the world don't interest me.
Stone's problem is that he isn't very innovative and lacks a deep understanding of basketball. He can make all the high percentage moves and he can prepare well -- but, outside of luck, that is about as far as he can go. That makes him fairly competent -- but it keeps him from being in the top tier of GM's. There is a lot more to it than just tanking and liquidating assets.
He just did the KD trade, one of the largest trades in NBA history and resulted in dumping JG who is playing like an ass for one of the top 10 players in the league. His contracts are innovative a lot of them are unguaranteed. He got us assets in 2027 and 2029 as well as KD for one swap and one pick. He made mistakes signing DFS and FVV to bad deals but nobody could tell in advance FVV would get injured before season ans DFS would be a scrub when he came back. DFS surgery was supposed to be a minor one they projected him back in training camp. Oh and they both have expiring deals anyway so he still has backdoors that can get Rox out of messes. There is a lot more than just tanking and liquidating assets but if you have a massive bias against the GM and limited understanding of the salary cap you ignore everything he has done and keep posting ignorant BS. Butbutbut Stone did nothing at the deadline Fire Stone
Stone is subpar but not the worst GM out there for sure. Scott Perry from the Kings for example is someone I wouldn't want over Stone
How is he subpar he started with nothing and got the Rockets to 2nd seed in Y4 and 3rd seed in Y5 without FFV and Adams. Your picture is even KD you know who traded for KD right? Subpar lmao A lot of the posters here dont have any clue and just pull **** outta their ass.
Most GMs don't have a deep understanding of bball... that's what all the staff is for...... As far as innovation, the Rockets under Stone were the ones who made possessions the new 3 point math. He did build a roster to lean into overwhelmingly winning the possession battle through rebounds, steals, and turnovers.
